Kickin' the Sugar

As I log my foods everyday I feel somewhat confident with what I am eating, with one exception of course. I use sugar in my coffee religiously and by the end of the day I feel I consume way to much sugar. I am looking for suggestions on sweeteners that don't spike insulin and that are not synthetic like Splenda. I have tried palm sugar and like it, but it contains the same amount of calories as white sugar. Any suggestions would be very helpful.

Thanks

I don't know about you, but after I eat some sugar, I do like to kick it. :smokin:

Are you trying to just cut out the calories or do you have a medical reason for not wanting the insulin spike?

Can you settle for just straight cream in your coffee and no sugar? Stevia is natural but depending on the brand some have a funky after taste. I usually only use it for baking substitute. Agave is supposedly slower to digest and blood sugar friendly. Xylitol was another one but never tried it. Careful of sugar alcohols if used more then in small amounts, they are not digested by the body and can be like a laxative.

I actually prefer my coffee without cream (unless I treat myself to bitter starbucks) then I need cream and sugar. I am just noticing that sugar is my biggest hurdle in calorie intake on my food log. I am trying to eat cleaner I guess...and don't like coffee by itself. To be honest sweets in general are my weakness, but I am trying really hard to find alternatives that are healthier. This has ment for me; learning to like more fruits. Yes'um I haven't always been a fan. Thanks everyone for your help!

If cleaner is your goal, I always advocate raw honey. Yes, it is still sugary, but it's natural and has a host of other health benefits. (Raw, organic honey is sometimes considered a superfood.) Plus it gives coffee a really nice flavor.
  • hot tea with organic honey is good. coffee i find makes me feel sluggish after about 2 hours.

My morning coffee is my consistent black mark too. Cream and sugar. I've started by cutting down on the sugar and now I'm reducing how many cups I have. If I only have 1, I won't feel so bad about putting stuff in it.

so... you take your coffee black with sugar?
I ask b/c I stopped adding sugar but I use soy milk - which is sweetened.

From what I understand agave is supposed to be a good alternative. I used it for a while but I like a lot of it so I just stick with soymilk to level out calories.

I tried the Stevia stuff a while back in coffee. It was SUPER sweet. I cannot attest to it's healthy-ness however.

Agave nectar. I use it in so much. It has a lower glycemic index and you use about 1/3 less of it than you would sugar. So, if you put 1 tsp of sugar in your coffee, you'd probably get away with about 4 drops of agave for the same sweetness (and it tastes fine, no weird flavor at all - I HATE stevia and sucralose and all those).

Definitely worth having in the house - heck, I even used it for awhile for pancake syrup because I ran out and didn't want to use the corn syrup crap.

I weaned myself slowly away from sugar in coffee unti l could enjoy it black. Now I like it with a little milk but don't drink it every day.

I like the idea of trying it with honey. I think that might taste awesome.

3 times over the years I have totally given up sugar and all foods that contained refined sugar. After a couple of weeks, other foods were starting to taste sweet. Fruits were amazingly sweet to me. It doesn't seem to hold true though for just cutting down on sugar-containing foods like baked goods which I am doing now. Wish I could kick the sweet tooth forever but it doesn't seem likely.

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions. I think I will try a few of them over the weekend. I might see if I can get my hands on a coconut creamer (flavored) and kick the sugar for creamer. That's not going backwards....right?
