I took it in the past. I had no side effects. My adult daughter is taking it now and has no side effects. We are doing MFP together and basically following the same plan. She takes it for 3 months and then the third month she takes a break to keep the pill working and not get addicted. Then she goes back on it. I take that same one month break with her where I will eat above my weight loss calorie goal to see if I can maintain my weight loss. She has lost probably about 13 pounds more than me on the Phentermine and I have counted calories and exercised. She loses steady and I am up and down. So you can see there is a difference. From my experience in the past I know that you must use this opportunity to make the changes you need to and to learn all you can while you have the chemical help so that when you go off of them you will be able to maintain your loss. You might get slammed for using a pill on this site but I am from the generation that believes in "better living through chemistry".0

The doctor only gave it to me because of my thyroid condition and my metabalism isn't what it should be to begin with and i am not that far from my goal and he thought i needed that extra help to get to a healthy weight for my height I am 5'7 and currently weigh 151, a year and a half ago i started at 190 and the first 40 i lost on my own with no help so people can say what they want. After gaining back 10 i never got to my original goal of loosing 50 pounds so I have about 11 pounds to go and I still want to strength train also so i am doing what i can. I was leary of taking a pill but the dr thought it would help me get to where i want to be so i can start working on turning the leftover fat into muscle. Thanks for the info I am just finding it hard to eat during the day and when I try to force myself to eat I feel sick.0

Maybe try to do protien shakes , it will add calories and all the nutrients, sometimes it is easier to drink than eat.:drinker:0

I took phentermine for about 9 months. During that time frame I went from happy and looking healthy (overweight, but good color, well rested, good quality skin and hair, etc) to looking like I was dying, and feeling like I wanted to kill everyone I interacted with. It took a few months to notice, but it DEFINITELY impacted my moods-- I was an evil beyotch...everyday. Like PMS x 1000. I also had REALLY bad nightmares, just about every night, where I would wake up from the nightmare and for a good 5-10 minutes after swear I could still see black things flying around my room (think the scene at the lake in Harry Potter). My mother hadn't seen me since I started taking the medicine, and when she saw me around month 8 she asked me if I had cancer. That was when I started talking to my doctor about doing something different. I was supposed to be taking this to look better-- not worse. I wasn't losing much weight (5 lbs a month or so), but my eyes were sunken in and I always had huge circles under them. My hair and nails were dry and brittle, and my skin broke out at even the thought of something touching it.
I'm not saying everyone would have these problems, but I will DEFINITELY be staying away from it in the future-- and keep an eye out for these side effects if you do decide to take it-- at least you will have an idea what is causing them. I didn't realize how angry I was behaving until after I fought with many many people and finally decided maybe they weren't all a brand new problem-- I was.0 -
Well thank you for sharing that with me the only issue I have really been having is that I am not sleeping very well but that started about 2 weeks before I started taking the medicine and I don't think I be on it that long I don't think, I only have about 11 more pounds to loose and the doctor only gave me 30 days of it and I have to go back and see him on March 8th for an update to see what he is going to do I have lost 5 pounds since I started taking it. Really what I was looking to do was to get closer to my goal so I could just excersise and try to tone what is left. Most of the weight I lost myself last year when I started I was 190 and now I am 151 so I am almost back to where I was when I gave up 4 months ago. I am just hoping to get to where I want to be and the rest I think I can do on my own. I hope that you are doing well and that you reach your goals because everyone on here seems to be great and very helpful and it keeps me on the right track where I want to be, best to both of you and if your looking for more friends feel free to add me always looking for more encouragement.0

I have taken it and there are side effects....dry mouth, nervousness, and definitely sleeplessness. I have to take it early in the morning or I will not sleep well that night. When I do take it I use it for a month and then take 6-8 weeks off of it, it is habit forming and loses effectiveness over time. I used it as a temporary tool to get me on track, and started tracking my food and exercising regularly at the same time to develop lifelong habits that would get and keep me healthy. I have had friends who take it and do not change their eating and/or exercise habits, they do not have the results I did and have put the weight back on after they stop taking it. It has been a year since I used it to lose roughly 25 pounds fairly quickly, I have kept those pounds off and lost more since then (the number on my profile is incorrect since I started at a higher weight before using MFP). I believe it can be used safely if you are careful and aware of what you are doing. It is a controlled substance, and (yes, I am repeating myself) habit forming.0

That may or may not have anything to do with the diet pills. Your daughter is (I assume) much younger than you, and unless she is your clone, she's going to have a different metabolism. You may even have had different starting weights or be different heights. There is no possible way to know if the difference in your weight loss is due to pills or something else entirely. Weight loss does not work the same for everyone, not even family members.
That said, I wouldn't do it. Learn to eat in moderation without relying on something else. Are you going to take the pill for the rest of your life? Obviously not. You need to learn how to eat what you like, and enough of it to fuel your body, in a healthy way. Plus, losing faster is not always desirable! It increases your chances of losing muscle mass. I also don't buy that there are no side effects. Maybe most people don't notice any *now*, but how often do you hear about things down the road? I just wouldn't risk it myself.0 -
Hi there! I took Phentermine several years ago, and it caused me to have drastic mood swings. I was evil. Seriously, my family hated being around me. I hated the way I felt, and within a week of being off of it, I was back to my normal sweet self. It did curb my appetite, but that was the only positive thing I can say about it. It doesn't effect everyone this way, but I just wanted to let you know my experience. Wishing you luck on your weight loss journey!0

Thank you I will keep that in mind and hopefully I won't be on it for a long period of time, glad that you have had success0 -

Thank you for sharing if I notice any changes in my mood in a bad way I would stop taking it right away my family is to important to me but so far so good with that, the dry mouth is kind of annoying i just make sure i have gum with me all the time to deal with that, other than that everything seems to be good, wish you well on your journey as well and best of luck to all of you0 -
I took it a couple years ago and did not have any adverse effects but I was closely monitored - checking in with the nurse/doctor each week. I lost about 30 pounds, had lots of energy, and it suppressed my appetite. However, I have gained the weight back. Obviously, I did not develop the new habits of healthy eating and exercising like I should. I'm trying to do it right this time.0

Well I wish you the best on your journey I am sure you will get there as long as you want it bad enough, we all need the drive in order to suceed in anything we do and I have that drive now and i know i can do it and so can you0 -
I took Phentermine a few years ago, and was very successful. I just started taking it again as I'm trying to lose my baby weight. I had fantastic results from it the first time and consider it "the magic pill!" My eating habits are terrible, I eat whatever I think will taste good at the time, and just keep eating until I feel like crap. With Phentermine, it completly controls my cravings, and forces me to make better food decisions because I'm eating to fuel my body and not to satisfy some sort of craving. So I still have to work out, and eat right, but Phentermine makes this much easier! I have minimal side effects, dry mouth is one of them, and I do tend to get a little jittery, but nothing serious at all, just something I notice! Good luck, whatever you decide to do!0
