"The best way for an 'apple shape" to lose weight is cardio"

I was reading up on the apple shape (because I found out this is what I am) and the writer said that if I want results, I need cardio. Now, I LOVE lifting..so yeah. will it work for me instead of cardio? My hips and legs have slimmed down unfortunately, but my tummy hasn't budged and it makes me mad.

    I've seen advice based on body type and generally it says to do cardio on top of lifting.
  • Hit the treadmill or elliptical! Or do like I do and shake your butt...I mean dance :laugh: I have all the Just Dance games on WIii and I love them! Do the harder songs or try the Just Sweat option or go to youtube and type in cardio, I've seen a lot of Tae Bo videos on there and I'm sure there's tons of other things too, just have to look a little more. Cardio = Heart...get your heart pumping! :smile:

    Cardio did nothing for my apple shape. Bear in mind you can't spot reduce. Women who carry fat around their torso (apple shapes) tend to have higher chronic levels of the stress hormone cortisol, so figuring out how to reduce your stress is a good place to start. Otherwise, though, fat will go from where it goes, so the best you can do is create a deficit to lose weight, and make sure you're toning up the muscle under the "problem" fat to reduce the visual effect.

    It's not the exercise that makes you lose weight/fat.. It's the calorie deficit.

    As long as you are in a calorie deficit(no matter what type of exercise you do), you will lose weight.

    I'm a "pear" shape and people say all the time, that pears shouldn't lift because we have more muscle in our legs already and will only bulk up.. and to that I say, bull crap.

    Unfortunately for us apple-shape types, the belly is what bothers us the most. I don't think cardio alone is the answer. Don't stop your lifting, just use cardio to accompany it. Cardio is great for heart-health and burning calories, but lifting (gaining muscle) will burn calories at a much faster rate, even at rest.
    Don't worry, keep at it and eventually your tummy will go down. I know this because I am also apple-shape and mine did ;)
  • That makes no sense. Cardio helps anybody burn more calories. Lifting helps anybody build muscle. NO MATTER WHAT SHAPE YOU HAVE.

    Fat will come down slower from your problem area, so combining lifting with cardio would be a great plus. But as long as you are losing fat, you are working towards reducing the fat from your problems areas (even though they are the last to go). But extra cardio will not help you lose stomach fat rather than leg fat...

    My friend had open heart surgery and her rehab doctors told her the best way to cut out the belly fat is to walk, so walking can also be cardio. I'm finally noticing my belly fat going down, but I do Zumba 2 to 4 times a week but not a lot of walking right now, but I'll get back to that when it warms up.

    If it's a larger midsection on a female it could be more likely visceral fat which may or may not respond differently that cosmetic fat(subcutaneous). Mayo Clinic, etc. suggest long amounts of vigorous exercise to reduce visceral fat.

    Cardio is almost always a good thing, so is lifting, if you do both then that is just that much better!
    (and please note that I said ALMOST I don't want to hear about that one special case or wtf ever)

    I'm apple and unfortunately I can't shift the belly with weights alone. I really hate cardio - banging away on the treadmill is my idea of hell. I've started doing couch25k outside and I'm starting to really enjoy it, so I think it's just a matter of finding some cardio that you enjoy.
