Regulating metabolism.. option 1, 2 or 3?

Due to meds I have recently been on.. seroquel and cymbalta my metabolism is now shot. Put on 15lbs in 2 months without changing my food/exercise at all. I have been taken off these a few days ago.
I have three different options. Which one would you choose?

# 1. Go on medication the doctor gives me to regulate/boost it.
# 2. Go on a natural herbal supplement to boost it.
# 3. Try without supplements for awhile and see how I go with regular diet/exercise to try boost it.

Positives/Negatives for Each:
#1. Positive: effective. Negative: expensive. Lots of chemicals in them!! Lots of side effects. Once I stop them I may regain all the weight back and metabolism may go back to sheethouse.

#2. Positive: herbal, natural. No chemicals. Quite cheap. No side effects. Negative: Once I stop them I may regain all the weight back and metabolism may go back to sheethouse.

#3: Positive: Not putting crap into my body, not potentially making it worse in the long run. Cheapest option. Negative: May keep gaining weight...

If #1's already happened then I'd have to go with that.

#3 would be an option for me with an emphasis on "eat more, train like a mofo".
  • What about a mix? Try 3 for a bit, if it isn't what you need it to be add some supplements?

I have talked to my GP and they have given me a script.. doesn't mean I'm going to necessarily use it. The amount of side effects of some of this stuff is ridiculous. I just wanna stop taking medications altogether. I already eat and train like a mofo... still putting weight on :(

I guess, but I cannot keep gaining weight though :(!

I mean eat 2000-3000 and train like you're entering a competition. That's what I would try to do anyway. You can always change things up/down/sideways if it's not working. It will take a while to change, of course, so expect to gain weight over the next couple of weeks. Think how a ship turns. So give it 2 months of being strict with whatever you decide to do.

I already train like I'm entering a competition and used to eat 1600-1800ish and was maintaining well. Now I am gaining on that amount no matter what.. I can't gain anymore because I don't want to be a fat PT :(

After quitting Seroquel I still gained weight without overeating for about 4-5 months. Then it was at a standstill for a while, and now I'm losing. I would've picked #1 if I had had the option.

    Frustrating.

Well, you either eat less (and you know where that ends up) or you eat 2000+ and see how things go. It's always a PITA doing this but that's just how it is.

If you want to boost your metabolism, then eating even less is not the answer. Training hard is one answer but you say you already are. Your food diary seems to suggest an average of under 1500 a day, though, but I suspect you're not fully diarising everything (eating and training so I can't provide answers on this). It's up to you. You're going to have to experiment.

I only started logging again few days ago because I was in hospital for like 2 months. Been eating the same thing exactly for months on end so saw no point in logging but just started logging again and cutting more

Any metabolism boost you get from from a natural supplement isn't going to be enough to make any difference weight wise (and just because it's "natural" doesn't mean that it's safe--ephedra was natural and killed at least 155 people). As a pp said, you'd be better off doing weight training and building some muscle--guaranteed to increase metabolism.

What kind of training have you been doing in the hospital for two months?

My suggestion - continue your non-hospital routine for two months and see what happens.
I know if I had been in the hospital for two months, I'd be lucky if I only gained 15 pounds.

the same as outside the hospital. I was given leave and went to my gym which is a walk up the road 6x a week. I was only physically sick whilst in there for about a week.

Well, from this point on, you have the option of eating more, eating less, training harder, the same or going easy on the training. Based on my previous experience and hearing what is usually causing people problems, I'd train the same (you say you train hard so no need to push it harder) but eat at TDEE for a couple of months. Focus on fitness, let your metabolism sort itself out. Perhaps look at bulking up (no bad thing for a PT) - if people do comment, say your current goal is to increase strength.
