I generally do the elliptical for an hour and the machine tells me I have burned usually between 750-800 calories. When I enter that I have done an hour on the elliptical into My Fitness Pal, it says I have burned about 1200 calories. Anyone know why? Which one is right?

If the machine says that you've burned roughly 700-800 calories then adjust the calories in the box where it says 1200, its just an estimate. I'd go for what the machine says because ROUGHLY if you go hard at it on the Elliptical, you burn roughly 100 calories every 10 minutes so I think the machine is right compared to what MFP says
  • I talked to my personal trainer and he said that the calories on the machines are off about 20%. My fitness pal seems way overstated in the number of calories burned.

I haven't done much research about it on line though.

    Maybe I should.

For my exercise log I adjust it to what the machines say I burned for my weight and subtract about 20%.

I don't use the My fitness pal calculator.

    Hope that helps.
  • The machine is less reliable than MFP. The only way to know for sure is to buy a heart rate monitor. It uses your height, weight and heart rate to accurately assess the calories burned.

I use the numbers on the elliptical (even though it's lower than MFP)

Use the ones on the machine. MFP's numbers are notoriously high for cardio. Plus...MFP doesn't know what intensity you were working at....the machine does.
