I want to buy a treadmill but it's so hard to know what to invest in based on reviews. Would love some recommendations for under $1,000 if anyone has a running treadmill that they've been happy with.

Me, too! I spent the weekend doing some research, but there is SO much information out there. I think for me (200 pounds, 6mph runner), I might need to bump up to $1500 to $2000 budget.
  • for the cost of a treadmill you could join a gym for two years... Just sayin'...lots more variety too!

Consumer Reports had an article on TMs recently (in the last couple months) -- it would probably be worth it to find that issue in the library or online for some guidance.

Thanks! I think I'm going to get either the ProForm or Horizon. They are both around $500.

I'm planning on buying a new one first, and work my way through that before investing a few hundred

The gym is 15 minutes away...that's 30 minutes wasted per trip. yet just another one of those lame *kitten* excuses that have kept me from running every day. Plus, some people in my household are scared to try running in public. I'm willing to do whatever it takes to help people in my household succeed in their goals. Just said.

Which ever you buy make sure the deck is the longest you can get. Some of these treadmills have a tiny deck and you are unable to stride out walking never mind jogging or running. I got mine from ebay it was 799. Try there first.

UPDATE: Just in case this thread comes up for someone else in search of a treadmill, I ended up purchasing the Horizon for $625 from Amazon. It is better than expected. Super sturdy and well constructed. I was worried it wouldn't seem as stable or reliable as the gym treadmills -- but it's really exceeded our expectations. Fiance and I have been running on it several times a day for up to an hour at a time. It was pretty easy to put together (he's handy and did most of it).

Anyway, I didn't want to spend a grand on a treadmill, so this was a really good starter treadmill for me. I set up my laptop in front of it and watch "Biggest Loser" episodes while running on it.
  • I've been doing research for awhile now and found the most helpful recommendations on the Runner's World treadmill forum. They just switched over to a new forum software, so all the prior posts were lost, but the regular posters there are extremely helpful.
