Hi my name is shannon, I have over the last couple of years made some pretty hard choices, not to get into too many details but all were very necessary, most recently i quit smoking about a year and a half ago. I have recently started talking to friends and i have joined a gym where i am trying to attend 3 to 4 times per week. As a busy mom of 4, this can prove difficult. I have decided that for my families benefit and my own to make better choices in what we eat. Unfortunately, I was never taught much about proper nutrition, I am learning however. I heard about the site an i am hoping this will make it easier for me to hold myself accountable for what i am eating and doing. I dont really know alot about carbs etc... any help i can get i am grateful for.... :D have a great day and i look forward to learning more about this site and everything involved, thanks

    Much of this depends...

What are your fitness goals? (a particular weight? body fat percentage? get ripped, cut, or just in shape?)

What are doing eating wise? And are you tracking it? (MFP, makes it easy to track and be accountable, especially via smartphone)

What kind of exercise program are you on? (strength training? body weight? calisthenics? circuit training? mostly cardio?)

What kind of progress do you want? (how much do you wish to lose? or even gain, if you are trying to pack on muscle)

How much can you dedicate to this? (since you are a busy mom and all)

Are you willing to give this your all?

I am currently 174 lbs, 5'5", I would like to get down to around 130, . I dont know much about body fat percentages, I definitely want ot get in shape, not necessarily ripped though. I am currently doing a walk-run cardio program, to build up my cardio, I am also doing some weight training. Ultimately i would like to lose around 40 pounds, I am a busy mom of 4 but i have committed my self to the gym for an hour-hour and a half 2 days on and 1 off. As I get in better shape this may change to more. I am totally giving it my all i Need to be healthier for my family, i want them to have better habits growing up than i did. Thanks so much for the interest..

The gist of all the advice I get online is try to eat 80/20 ratio - 80% good nutrition, and 20% indulgence.

I have learned the best way is to eat as many Whole Foods as possible. If you can pick them from the earth, and eat with little prep, these are the best foods to eat. Vegetables, Fruits, Lean meats, Eggs, Whole Grains, etc.

There is a little wiggle room, because people are so different. Milk is a great food for some, where it makes others sick.

Eat as few processed foods as possible, but the ones you do eat - be aware of the ingredients. If you don't know an ingredient, it's probably not the best for you. Also be aware of the salt content - too much salt may leave you bloated and not very motivated for exercise.

The best advice - READ! I hope you like learning, because the best way to eat well for a long period of time is to understand your body and the food around you! The more you learn, the easier it is to make healthy choices! Make it your hobby! Become that girl who just knows what to pick it up - PRACTISE! If you aren't sure about a specific thing, ask us! I just started healthy eating this year, and I feel so much better about my choices.

This stat is pulled out of the air somewhere, but they say it's 80% Healthful diet, 20% Healthful Living to a better body!
