Celebrate the Small Victories

My heart full this morning and it's bubbling over into this post.
WARNING!!! cheesy motivational words ahead. Stop reading now! You've been warned.
I am one of those people who start to exercise, start to eat right, start to get motivated and then let little things derail me. I'll get a cold after two weeks of good exercise and never go back to the gym. I will go to a birthday party/holiday celebration/graduation party and give myself permission to splurge and never quite make it back on track. I am the person who will look at how far I have to go and say what's the use and just give up. It's that kind of thinking that got me to an all time high of 275 pounds.
On April 9th I went to the doctor. I got the same lecture I have been getting for years about how I need to lose weight lose weight lose weight and I decided I was sick of it. SICK OF IT! I was going to do something about this once and for all. I dusted off my workout gear and headed back to the gym and started logging on to this site again to track my calories. I set the goal that by May 30 I would be 260 pounds. Since then I have been in the gym 5 days a week and eating according to MFP guidelines. I've put in the work. I've made allowances for special occasions (always staying in my calorie range) and rearranged my exercise schedule around my life. So what do you think happened when I stepped on that scale this morning?

For a moment I did feel defeated. For a moment I wanted to throw in the towel. For a moment my stupid "all or nothing" brain said what's the point. But the girl who has busted her butt in the gym since April 9th said no. The girl who has started choosing yogurt over chips and water over soda said "not so fast". The girl who started with a resting heart rate of 82 (now 57) said "are you kidding?"
The moral of the story is this: celebrate the small things. Whether you have 20 or 100 pounds to lose, take pride in the little things that change every day! If you don't quite hit your mark even after you've given your all, set a new goal to work toward. Don't give up. Keep pushing through. My new favorite quote says "if you focus on results, you'll never change. But if you focus on change you'll see results.
If you're still reading this post I hope my ramblings have been an encouragement for you to keep striving toward your goal!!

Totally awesome and I love the quote I always read quotes for encouraging moments I think I am going to put that one on my mirror in the bathroom Do you mind? and I love the self talk between the old girl and the new girl. The new girl rocks she has a great attitude which will take you far keep her around and ditch the old one!!!!:bigsmile:0

Reading what you call your ramblings is totally sounding like me. My starting weight was 274 and I feel that I have always sabatoged myself as well. Something in my head says so... kind of doing this alone so far have lost 69 pds and still going i think it's awesome when you read someone elses story to know that your not alone. Everyday is a struggle but with my "one day at a time" statement I'm going to do this and I'm sure glad that you shared your story!0

Wow, thank you some much for those words of inspiration!!! You will never know what they mean to me, as I too am 1.2 pounds off my goal of 10 by tomorrow....and let's face it I won't lose that in one day. So instead of simpering in my "defeat" of not meeting a goal, I am celebrating the fact that blouses that didn't fit 60 days ago now hang correctly on my frame. Pants that didn't button, now button....still tight but they button...
So you are correct, celebrate the small victories and don't waste time over goals not exactly met.....after all they will be met just maybe a week later than you thought when you set them. As long as every Monday (my weigh in day) the scale is down some something, and my progress graph is an overall downward trend, I am happy....I didn't put this weight on in a month or even a year so if it takes me some time to take it off, so be it......0 -
