Hi, new to MFP, I'm Mark

Hi, I'm Mark. I discovered MFP 10 days ago and have to say it has been very helpfull starting me off on the right track to proper diet. I have always went on a crash diet, starving myself for weeks, but always failed and felt miserable. This is a very simple method. No gimmicks. I really dont have a clue yet as to correct sugars, carbs, sodium, etc. I just try to plan next days meals by searching foods on this site. I thought progresso soups were to good to be true, but am slowly realizing they are what pushes my sodium mg over the limit. I am just in the learning phase right now. The thing I find so difficult so far has been trying to guess calories at restaurants. We went to our fav Chinese restaurant this past weekend. I ordered from the nutritional portion of the menu. It said the rice, veggies, large shrimp selection was only 300 calories. I was somewhat skeptical eating all that was before me, so I found a chinese selection on MFP' list that was about 500 cal and inputted that one. Its tough choosing a similar MFP food entry when we eat out. What do all of you do when it comes to eating out?
starting weight - 255
goal - 200

  • Hi Mark. Welcome! In reading your post I found myself in similar situations with eating out. I usually try to cook but sometimes real life crashes in an I find myself in a restaurant. Usually I plan ahead to what restaurant I go to, look up their menu on line and put int the calories for what I'm going to order. Of course this is fine if the menu is online, if not I do exactly what you did and find something similar on MFP. All in all its not an exact science when finding restaurant calories so I balance by watching what I eat for the other meals that day and getting my butt to do some exercise....preferably before said dinner out for me, that way I feel like I earned it.
