Interval training

So, usually when I "walk/run", I just run for as long as I can and then walk until I feel comfortable enough running again. I could burn a fair amount of calories but today I thought...I'm going to really do an interval.
I got on the treadmill, aiming for 30 minutes and I ran more frequently and longer than I have ever before!! I warmed up, walking for 5 minutes, then did intervals of running for 1 minute and walking for 2 minutes for 21 minutes straight then cooled down with slow walking for 4 minutes. That's a total of 8 solid minutes running. I don't think I've ever run that much. At one time, I ran for 5 minutes straight but then didn't/couldn't run anymore the rest of the time I was on the treadmill.
My pedometer said I burned 356 calories. I put my age, sex, height and weight into my pedometer so do you think this is accurate?? The treadmill (which only takes my weight) said I burned only a little over 100.

Hey girl! Great job doing the intervals!!! I currently weigh 156 and I started MFP in January 2010 @ 185. I noticed we are about the same weight and goals so I thought that would be relavent information! haha I have a heart rate monitor and it determines how many calories you've burned by how hard your heart is working. I would say 356 sounds close depending on how long it takes your heart to recover during your 2 mins of walking. The main factor is the SPEED you're running. I tend to burn 130cals per mile I run straight without walking @ 6.4mph pace. But this is for my height and weight...
Regardless of the exact calories... great job on running 8 minutes!! I know how it feels to go from only being able to "run" @ 5.0mph for 1 min at a time to running 40mins straight. Keep it up!!!0 -
P.S.> my polar heart rate monitor was the best investment I've ever made... consider it!!0

HIT work is amazing and my HRM says I burn more as well and I tend to believe it judging by how much extra I have to work.
I prefer HIT on an elliptical because the higher levels really push your arms as well as your legs for an even greater burn.
I believe that normal modes on the treadmill and Elliptical are about the same (maybe slighter higher on the Elliptical) but with HIT routines I swear the Elliptical burns a lot more!0 -
That's exactly the way I started. I printed off the Couch to 5K from coolrunning.com. Then I downloaded the "Podrunner Intervals" podcasts from iTunes (13 of them for free). The music is great and it matches up exactly with the Couch to 5K running plan. It has helped me build stamina and my running time over the course of several weeks. You should try it. I'm now up to 5 minute runs. I didn't think I would EVER be able to run that long at one time. I have never run in my life, so that's saying something.
Good luck with the run/walking. Keep it up. You're doing great.0 -
Thanks, guys!! I'm saving up for a heart rate monitor! My pedometer has always been pretty accurate as far as I can tell so I've just been using that when I walk and run. This time it seems too good to be true but I know that I worked up QUITE a sweat and my heart rate was going the whole time!0

Way to go! HIIT works wonders for me! I really like interval training! The ave is 100 calories per mile, give or take some depending on intensity, weight and your heart rate.0

I wear an HRM when I run on the TM. The TM is usually pretty in sync with my HRM as far as heart rate goes, but it's WAY under on calories. You could always add the TM & pedometer together and average them out.
Congrats on intervals, it's what I do. Sounds like it's time to start couch to 5k for you! (www.coolrunning.com)
P.S. I've found that it's pretty safe to estimate 100 cals for every 10 mins of solid exercise (I burned just over 300 in 30 mins today)0 -

I agree! I've been WANTING to try the C25K but I'm not sure yet. Maybe I'll start it next month. This month I'm already changing my routine so much. Adding yoga instead of turbo kick, intensifying my strength routine, and doing cardio 2-a-days instead of once.
Also, yeah. I did 30 minutes so I think it's safe to say about 300. I think I worked harder than I do on the elliptical at 30 minutes and can usually burn about 320 in 30 minutes on the elliptical...The ave is 100 calories per mile, give or take some depending on intensity, weight and your heart rate.
Yeah! That sounds good. I did 2.7 miles.0 -

I don't mean to break in, but can you tell me how you do your HIT on the elliptical? I do them on the TM but would like to try it on the ellip. I've been playing around with it on the ellip a little but would like to compare notes...thanks0 -
I hear the Body Bug is supposed to be more accurate than a heart monitor. I don't know really as I do not have either. I am doing some research on them before purchasing, but The bug might be worth looking into if any of you are on the market.
And GREAT JOB on the intervals!!!0 -
The average mile is about 100 calories if you are at a steady pace. Running intervals actually makes you burn more calories than that because your heart rate changes. Also, running intervals is better for your body because it "keeps your muscles guessing" so to speak. If you always run at the same pace for long periods of time, your body will plateau and end up not burning as much. Plus, I think intervals are fun and break up the monotony. Add in some hills to keep up the fun!0
