Hello! Just went on my cross trainer at home for 45minutes. Went at a steady pace so i could endure the 45minutes. Worked up a sweat and my hrm just said i burnt 113 calories? Surely that can't be right?! Do you think my hrm is not right as it was only a cheap one?
Can someone please advise! Thanks!

What kind of HRM is it, and does it have a chest strap? Does it have the ability for you to enter your info, height, weight, age, etc?0

Doesn't seem right to me. The only exercise I do at the moment is walking (slow pace) and I burn more calories than that in 45 minutes x0

It doesn't have a chest strap. I did have to enter my height, weight and age e.t.c though! I thought it would give me a rough guide but that seems ridiculously low!0 -

The chest strap types monitor your heart rate the entire time, so they tend to be more accurate. I would definitely agree that the burn it gave you is low for what you did - I can burn 100 cals in a 25 minute walk with my dogs.
If you just got the HRM, see if you can return it or exchange it for a model with a chest strap. I have a New Balance N4 that I'm very happy with, and many MFPers swear by the Polar FT4 and FT7 models.0 -

It actually could be right - i am a small girl, and I am very fit - i haev a resting heart rate of between 45-50. It takes me FOREVER to get my heart rate up, and it also takes me alot to get a big burn. To put in perspective, i burnt 400 cal on a 10 mile (fast) reun.
Tips i use are 1 min going as hard as you can at a high speed, dropping back to slower, up again etc to raise and lower heart rate ..... if you can read/chat/play with your phone on the machien you are probabley not working hard enough!
Or... it coudl be a faulty battery...................0 -
Thats about as much as I burn. I burn just the same doing strength training, so I don't even bother with cardio.0

Depending on how hard you are working, your metabolism, and size, it could be accurate. But I agree with the others that if you are really concerned, get one of those chest strap monitors and see what it says.0

I have a wrist watch heart rate monitor. Can't remember the brand off the top of my head. I feel like it always tells me I burned more calories than I feel I am. So, often I'll just take my heart several times in a work out just to get a feel for what my average heart rate is & then go to a calculator like this one: http://www.shapesense.com/fitness-exercise/calculators/heart-rate-based-calorie-burn-calculator.aspx
It's more of an estimation, but you know 145 calories for 45 minutes seems looooow. I usually knock out about 300 calories on the elliptical & that's when I'm taking it easy!0 -
It depends on how small/large you are and how hard you actually working. I have found that sweating doesn't always mean you are working out really hard.
Since your HRM doesn't have a chest strap it won't be super accurate as it will only base your calorie burns on your last HR reading. Are you able to purchase a different one or take that one back to get one with a chest strap?0 -
I think i burn more doing an exercise dvd. It's a bit disheartening!0

Yes i will do! I just don't know how to log my exercise until then! It just seems very low for 45 minutes!0 -
I bought a sportline watch with no chest strap, cheap from walmart. Began to question whether the calorie burn was right. Went to several web sites to compare amounts and now I use it for a HRM read out, record the number on a sticky I keep handly and use this website to check it out. I usuallly end up using the website for the amount of calories.

I also use several HR readings to get an average number to use0
