This is Me =)

I am new to myfitnesspal. It was referred to me by my cousin because I am looking to lose 60 pounds before I leave for our family vacation at the end of June and she said it would help me keep up with calories.
When I started using this app, I was taking in approximately 2,000 calories per day which included at least 5-6 20oz Mountain Dews. On February 4, I joined the gym, and quit Mountain Dew completely (that was the hardest thing ever). I couldn't do much that first week, a few minutes on the elliptical and treadmill and that was it. I hadn't lost any weight and I was getting frustrated. Unfortunately, I am not a patient person and I know that losing that much weight is going to take patience.
Then I realized that even though I had cut out the Mountain Dew, I hadn't cut out the calories. I had just replaced the calories from the sodas with something else. So as of a week ago, I have cut down my calories from 2,000 per day to 1,200 per day. I haven't done away with the carbs and sugars but I haven't had anything like before.

I am 5'1" and weigh 188lbs. I am open to any and all suggestions that can help me with this goal

  • I would say stay focused on the big picture and don't let little slip ups get you down. Try to enjoy the process and the journey and stay positive!

    Hi Shelley,
you need to decide whether this will just be a quicky weight loss yoyo kind of a thing, or long term. If you plan to lose weight and stay healthy long term, replace your simple sugars with fruit and protein, exercise and eat a sensible diet. The weight will come off slower than you planned but you will gain a healthy and sustainable way of eating and living.
Good luck, and feel free to add me.

I'm looking at a long term healthy lifestyle change. And I know once I see a difference on the scale, I won't be so frustrated...it's just getting to that point.

    Thanks for the input =)
  • Hi! I know how hard it is to cut out the sweet stuff. I think it was great that you cut out the Mountain Dew. Now replace that with something that is good for you. Try eliminating one thing every few days. If you have a nagging sweet tooth I have found that fresh pineapple is very sweet. Also, Dark chocolate in moderation. I mixed raw almonds and dark chocolate chips in a bowl stay fresh bowl and I always have that handy so I don't choose something bad for me. Stock your fridge with fresh fruit and plain greek yogurt, so when you get hungry its there.

Also, for exercise I do Zumba. I like it because I don't feel like I'm working out. It's fun!

    You can do it!

    I'm on 1200 calories daily as well. I was 221 down to 171 and I'm 5'5".

Add me if you like. Seems we are in about the same boat. I need to cut out the carbs and sugars. I've been drinking nothing but water except for one diet coke this morning. I was dragging and needed something :) Feel free to add me though

If you don't mind my asking, how long did it take you to lose that?

See how you do on 1200 calories for a few weeks and if you don't see any progress or you do and plateau in the future, increase them again.

I'm not a big fan of 1200-cal eating plans and it may be a bit too drastic for you. I'm sending a FR now :)

I was thinking it may have been too drastic but so far, I've not been jittery or sick or feeling any side effects to the drop in calories. And honestly, I thought losing my Mt. Dews would affect me more =)
