I have IBS and I can be hungry 30 minutes after a big meal if it's not the right one.

I eat meat, woked veggies and stay away from/minimize my intake of pasta, bread and sugary treats/drinks. Raw veggies really does nothing for me except for problems. Oatmeal really helps; I use lactose free milk or soy milk because regular milk is sometimes gives me pain/bloating/gas/trouble. I stay away from apples, I make most of my meals from scratch because semifinished products contain too much of the troublesome ingredients, also minimizing yeast intake has helped me a lot.

Try to plan your eating; having a heavy steak and no veg for dinner and then having a big salad at night is no good; the veg travels faster through your digestive system and might make gas because of the meat travelling slower.

But then again, that's me. You need to find your own way; the only way to find something better is to make changes and wait for a couple of weeks to see if it's better.
  • The best thing that I've found that helps me, is to eat small amounts often so that my stomach is never completely empty. It's also helpful with my IBS symptoms because my gut gets a bit of a 'shock' if I try and eat a proper meal after a long gap. The things that make me bloat are overeating (ha, durrrr right?), too much insoluble fibre like raw veges, and beans, and also (weirdly) if I wear tight clothes around my stomach like pantyhose or high-waisted jeans, especially if I'm standing lots that day. I hope this helps!
  • I've been diagnosed with IBS, but only after ruling out all other options, not Crohn's, UC, or diverticulitis, I don't fit all of the "classic" IBS symptoms and I suffered from a lot of pain, to the point I was on Vicodin and Percocet to help manage it. Even with the drugs the only thing that would make the pain go away was not eating for about 3 days, then I would go another 3-4 days without eating because I was not having any pain. The longest I went was 10 days, but that included a 34 day hospital stay because of the infection I had. I am prone to infections especially in the descending colon. So I would avoid food for as long as I could, then I would eat a huge meal because I was so hungry and that would just start a cycle.

I am still dealing with that tendency to skip meals then over eat, but with the help and encouragement of a good friend I am learning how to eat several small meals a day. The only things I eat that are raw are bananas and avocados. I've also greatly restricted my diet in terms of what I can eat. I avoid lots of what would normally be considered healthy, mostly high fiber leafy veggies. No citrus and no tomato based foods. No red meat, no dairy except for eggs, and a little cheese now and then is ok with me, and a lot of ensure shakes, usually about one a day, or several when I'm having a flare up and I cut the fiber down as low as I can. No gallbladder either so I have to keep the animal fats low

I have ibs i tend to eat stuff throughout the day thats healthy, infact, cutting any grease out my diet really helped me a lot especially having no fizzy pop in my diet.
  • I may not be really qualified, I was diagnosed with a mild case of IBS after they found out it couldn't possibly be a gluten allergy.
My symptoms weren't so severe, just continuous soft bowel movements and occasional cramps where I couldn't stay away from the toilet for long.

Then I started losing weight, eating less and in particular, at least an apple a day, and the symptoms completely disappeared.
Your condition may be a totally different beast as MissPeppers said she stays away from apples.
I had heard about fibre all the time and thought that meant whole meal breads, and they never helped. Apple also happens to be fibre and I'm quite sure that that's what helps.

Everybody is different, I'd be curious to know how that would work for you.

I've also found that eating high fibre makes my condition worse, while intermittent fasting helps a lot!
Yes, it is very individual. Me not eating apples might also be an allergic reaction - cross allergy from pollen. Who knows. We just have to try and fail/succeed and note what works.

Everyone thanks for your posts. I think most of my problem is im addicted to coca cola and i know its bad for me but i get all emotional and stressed not evening mentioning the headaches and all that when i dont have some.
Also i think im my own worst enemy when it comes to my ibs has although i dont eat 'white' products bread pasta ect, i do drink tonnes of coffee and obviously have it milky :/ i no i no, maybe myt try the lactose free?!
Its got to a point where i am so used to the niggling pains that there a part of my life now.
The main thing for me at mo is the bloating!
  • I had to cut caffeine completely, except for some dark chocolate, or brownies from time to time. Caffeine is one of the things that I will notice almost right away if it will give me problems, other foods sometimes take a couple days. I will still drink coffee or something like that on a road trip. I only drink water, low calorie gatorade and beer, and I probably shouldn't even be drinking the beer but what is the point of a lifestyle change if you can't enjoy life.

I got crohns, but the symptoms are similar hey? What helps me is to eat smaller quantities, more frequently, My diet consists of:
Early morning: 1 Toast with slice of ham and coffee (I can't have eggs etc), banana at 10am, cup of soup at 12pm, 4 wheat crackers / yoghurt at 15:00 and then a light dinner (no carbs - mainly protein). It helped my symptoms and I'm losing a bit doing this... :-) and I think it might help with the bloaty feeling... good luck!

Have you tried Digestive Advantage probiotics? I take the IBS supplement and the lactose intolerant supplement. I think that has been the biggest help in cutting down on my IBS bloating. (In the past I had days where I looked 5-6 months pregnant from the bloating.)

Also, for me these things were triggers that I had to eliminate: soda, wheat, milk (but limited yogurt and cheese are ok), and peanuts (but not peanut butter). Everybody is different, but I kept a food diary and found that I would be more likely to have flareups when I consumed those things. I am not cured, but I no longer take any of my prescription meds and (TMI) my bowels are pretty normal, bloating minimal, and pain is pretty much nonexistent (unless I slip up and indulge in one of my no-no foods). I also no longer have that gnawing pain that seemed like hunger, but was made worse by food.
