At the Movies
Hitting the Cineplex? You may have bought tickets to a comedy, but if you stopped at the concession stand on your way in, chances are your diet is in for a real horror show. That's because even the smallest sized popcorn can pack more calories than a bacon double cheeseburger at Burger King¹—and that's without any butter topping.
Yup, at Regal Cinemas, the country's biggest chain, a small, naked popcorn serves up 670 calories and a whopping 34g of saturated fat, while a medium combo (popcorn plus soda) weighs in at 1,610 calories and 60 grams of saturated fat.² And don't even get us started on those mega-bags of sweets. Ok, do: An 8-oz bag of Reese's Pieces—a mere cup of candy—has 1,160 calories and 35 grams of saturated fat. (Sounds scarier than Saw VI!)
If you can't fathom sitting in the dark snackless, buy a water or diet soda on your way in—or break the rules and bring your own: Air popped popcorn has a healthy 31 calories a cup, so you can munch at the movies guilt-free. Click here to The Skinny: Pump Up Your Popcorn Vol. 10 Issue 20 for a few low-cal ways to jazz up its flavor.

yeah we sneak a bag of fit and active light, at least then we know we're not getting nailed with tons of fat and calories0

I went to the movies last Sat. night with my teenage daughter and did exactly that " I snuk in a 1/2 bag of smart pop in my purse"!! My daughter was mortified - Teeangers!! lol . I had looked up the calories for theater popcorn and butter before we went and could not believe it was over 600!!! That was all I needed to see and decided to sneak in my own!! I bought a small diet coke to go with my "illegal popcorn" and enjoyed the movie thoroughly!! :laugh:0

I bring my 100 calorie smart pop and a bottle of water. It's so much better to sneak in healthy alternatives.0

Oh yeah, the liquid heart clogging stuff they call butter taste so good, but is soooo baddddd. We just buy our own goodes and take it in because one, those products are ridiculously priced especially when you have 6 kids but when I think of all the calories I am putting in my mouth and my poor little arteries...I just can't do it!0

ughh I HATE how bad popcorn is at the theatres because I love it so much! Thats why I definitely bring my own now0

I bring my own ... stick them in baggies and shove them in hubby's jacket pockets. Sometimes I'll splurge and mix it with a bag of 100-calorie chocolate crisps.0

I am actually going to teh movies this Friday...I plan on brining my own popcorn which is the 100 cal popcorn by Orville.0

I know, you'd think these dummies would come up with healthier popcorn to charge an arm and a leg over......theater FAIL0

Oh so true!!!0 -
lol, I went to the movies last night. I prepopped 3 mini, 100 calorie bags. I took a big purse and snuck it in. I enjoyed it more than the actual movie popcorn. Since I started this MFP I have noticed everything is soooo salty. We have to be safe or we'll be sorry....lol0

Glad to know I am not the ONLY one that sneaks in popcorn!!!!!0

Agree with snowangel1975 - that's why I own a bigger purse  I pack a water bottle, and a couple snack bags with single servings of whatever I might be in the mood to snack on or a granola bar. Knowing I have them keeps me from getting anything when we get there and by the time the movie starts (I NEVER start eating until the movie starts, otherwise I'll run out too fast!) I get involved and forget I have the snacks! So I end up with only drinking water and ingesting zero calories. I big purses :bigsmile:0

My parents used to make me carry my big pink and purple Little Mermaid tote to the theatre b/c this place had nazis that would check your bags as you went in.....but they never checked the 7-year-old!
Then in college, me and some friends smuggled in bags of candy and cans of soda, and sat on the front row with some people also eating smuggled-in food, but I can't remember what they had. Anyways, an usher comes in before the movie, apparently looking for somebody, and he moves his flashlight along the first row where EVERYBODY is eating/drinking stuff that the theatre doesn't even sell and then just keeps moving along! I love how most places don't even care anymore, as long as you're discreet when you come in the door.0
