NUTS

I have such a hard time getting protein in. I was thinking I should start eating nuts. What are the best nuts to have for a healthy lifestyle and how much? And do you get them from the baking section at the grocery store or the bulk section?

nuts have sooo much calories and fat. i buy them at trader joe's pre-packed in serving sizes so that i dont go "nuts" with them. :glasses: i notice when i eat them i dont lose well because i can't stop (esp w/the cashews!)

My faves are almonds, macadamia nuts and cashews. I buy raw nuts from the bulk section b/c I don't like a lot of salt added to mine.

Planters NUT-rition mixes are also super duper good.
  • Pistachios are my favourite if I'm just eating raw nuts.....nut butters - peanut, sunflower seed & almond

    but.......

I love cashews too! oh & cashew butter! I think I was a squirrel in my past life

For nuts I tend to go for Pistacios... takes time to eat them if you buy them with the shell. Makes you eat less of them as nuts are high calorie but full o great fats and protein.

I also go for sunflower seeds as well. They contain a decent chunk of protein and take a bit to eat if you get the ones in the shell.

I love raw nuts (not legumes) and eat them often and they help me to get enough fat. However, they are a fairly poor source of protein. For me to get a large amount of protein from them, I would then be getting far too many carbs. There really is no replacement for meat from healthy animals. IMO.

I love macadamias the most. Contrary to some opinions about them being bad because of the calories and fat, I purposefully eat high calorie foods and by doing so, I never need to over-eat. I'm saving lots of money on my grocery bill too.

However, when I used to eat a "normal" diet (grains, legumes-high carb) I definitely was prone to over-eating nuts; usually the roasted and salted kinds too. But then again, I over-ate EVERYTHING (all high carb foods of course) so I wouldn't say that nuts were the problem.

Almonds are my go-to snack. I also got sucked in to a banner ad on here for Nuts.com. They have some really tasty stuff.

All nuts and nut butters! They are calorie dense and high in fat but they are the good fats. I think walnuts and almonds have some of the better nutritional values but don't quote me on that. Just try not to go over a serving or 2 and keep them in your calorie goals. In most grocery stores there are nuts sold near popcorn and snacks but in the bulk section near produce you should be able to get them too. If you go for nut butters try to just get natural, no added sugars or weird stuff. The ingredients should just be whatever nut and maybe a little salt if you prefer it that way. I personally love peanuts(though technically a legume) peanut butter, almonds, almond butter, pistacchios, cashews and pinenuts. I eat nuts or nut butter pretty much every day. Yum!

I know they aren't nuts but pumpkin seeds are a decent source of protein too :-) I eat almonds, pine nuts, walnuts, and pumpkin seeds regularly.

I love all nuts. Love the crunch. I have a hard time having any of the, in the house though because I can so easily overeat them. We have pecan trees so I have a lot of pecans available. Problem is 5-6 of them is 100 calories. I can eat 20 at a drop of the hat!
  • I love pecan nuts and almonds - YUM - and often add them to my salad or just eat them mixed with fruit and honey for breakfast. DROOL. But they're more fat than protein, if that's what you're looking for. Pumpkin seeds have a fairly decent protein value, I think, though, so maybe try that, adding it to a nice salad of some kind? I dunno, really.

Reeeeally? I LOVE them, but only have them at halloween time when I roast 'em up myself. Never even though about them as a daily snack of such.

Thanks for commenting on that. Have to check it out.

I always toss a handful of walnuts in my oatmeal. Pistachios are a favorite snack, as well as peanut butter (love to dip apple slices in peanut butter!). Raw almonds are always good for snacking - I used to keep a small container in my car, and would munch a few while out running errands, but found that my hubby would devour the entire can if I left them in there.

Another good use for pumpkin seeds - buy the raw ones (pepitas I think they are called? I get 'em at Trader Joe's) they are awesome with roasted butternut squash (peel & cube the squash, add diced mushrooms & the pepitas, toss with olive oil, a little salt & pepper & some smoked paprika, then roast - so so good!).

It really depends on your goals and what you are looking for health wise. Macademia, Walnuts, and Almonds are all great but for slightly different purposes. Do some research on the health properties of each.

I HAVE to portion out nuts or I could eat a whole bag in one sitting! Love em all!

Oh and buy them bulk if you can. Freeze so they dont go rancid. If you have a costco or sam's club membership can usually get a nice price on them. Costco even has bulk macadamians!

I think you should test which ones were easiest to crack open with your teeth! See how hard you have to bite before they burst.

QFT. Not all nuts are created equal. Nuts have lots of healthy fats and some protein, but aren't necessarily the best bang for your protein buck. Consider cottage cheese and Greek yogurt over nuts as a protein source instead.

I just bought Dry Roasted Edamame and they are VERY high in protein! Delicious, too!
