Whats the best way to drain can of tuna so that the tuna salad is not too mushy? Right now I use a can opener and force the top down to drain it but that wastes pieces of tuna and is not very efficient. Is there a better way?

What do you put in tuna salad. I am currently putting in walnuts, light mayo, cinnamon and black pepper.

I don't like mayo, so I can't help you with your recipe, but I've seen a tuna drainer they sell at the grocery store. It usually is near the tuna. You could invest in one of those.

Am I the only one who thinks that tuna can lids used to be thicker and it used to be easier to use them to drain the tuna?

Not sure about draining it, but my mom puts some mayo, celery (chopped) and some green onion (chopped) in with the tuna, it tastes really good!

Can't help you with the draining as I use the lid as well. As for in my tuna salad I put just a tiny bit of mayo, some hummus, diced onion, salt, and pepper. I like dried cranberries with my tuna, but not mixed in.

Yes! Now they just bend and squirt tuna juice all over you. :grumble:

A can strainer works very well. It fits inside a can of tuna for you to squish it really hard to drain it well (I hate mushy tuna!) -- my tuna comes out very dry using this. The strainer also fits on top of a regular size can, if you want to drain something without using a big strainer.

I've also wondered why they don't make the lids thicker to help... hate it when the top bends!

LOL how hard are you pressing that lid? Dont drain it down the sink buy a cat and give it to her. You've never known appreciation until you get tuna smelling kisses.

I haven't used mayo in over a year. I either use hummus (spinach & artichoke or supremely spicy) or plain greek yogurt mixed with some sriracha

I always use the lid and I never lose the tuna. Maybe you're just pressing too hard...

On a side note, just googled 'is tuna safe to eat regularly' and get some mixed opinions. Its tough to eat healthy these day. Tuna is cheap and fills you up but eating it daily may not be so safe.

I am eating mayo after years. Just started. In fact I think I never bought mayo in my life before. I am trying to up the intake of fats and proteins and keep carbs at 100g or lower. I dont care for mayo but I look for calorie fillers to meet my quota.
  • I would use a fine mesh colander to drain the tuna. Then shred it by rubbing it in your hands until all the chunks are gone. I just recently started using strained 0% fat Greek yogurt instead of mayo. I chop some celery and onion and sometimes a little dill pickle. Put it on wheat toast or bagel thin with lite Laughing Cow cheese wedge. oops I forgot pepper...fresh ground pepper to the tuna.
