I managed to get a broken collarbone a while back. I worked through it and it's healing, but the MRI showed that my shoulder is deteriorating. Yay for growing older.

I've started working with some light free-weights to strengthen the muscles up around it but I really don't know what I'm doing. What kind of exercises would be good?

I wouldn't try to self heal a joint problem. See an ortho and have them evaluate what is wrong, and get physical therapy. Once you do the PT you'll get the exercises you need to strengthen it.

I am in physical therapy for an injured shoulder--probably screwed it up pitching apples out of my garden. Shoulders are tricky. I second the advice about consulting an orthopedist.

I agree. I waited 5 months to see anyone after injuring my shoulder. (so stupid. turns out I tore 2 tendons in my shoulder, but never took the time to let it heal.) I finally found someone who knows sports medicine/joint injuries and did some therapy, then got some exercises to strengthen my shoulder without doing more harm. (Turns out that some of the stuff I was doing was actually hurting the injury.) It still took 3 months after seeing a doctor, but this past month I have finally been able to work out with full mobility and without pain. Wish I would have sought help sooner!

Damaged shoulders are very tricky, I wouldn't get advice from an internet forum on this (no offense to anyone). See a Physical therapist or an MD for exercises. A friend who was in great physical shape hurt his shoulder and he had pain for 2 years. He couldn't lift anything for a long time.
