Are they the worst? I'm craving one, it looks like the database puts them at about 300ish calories. Which I can "afford" to have today.

But just curious as to whether these are considered really really bad for you. They're from a locally-based chain, so they are homemade-ish.

It's the beef and the method of frying that makes them high calorie. Ask them what they use.. or just exercise a little more today and have one. lol

My best friends boyfriend can't eat high fat food, so he uses 96% beef and bakes them. I think he throws them in teh toaster oven for a fwe minutes if they aren't crispy enough for him. Let me tell you.. they are the BEST ones I've every had!!

If they are "homemade-ish" the old-school recipe probably calls for lard (spelled F-A-T) in the crust. And if they are made in the true style, they were probably deep fried in oil as opposed to oven-baked. Delish for sure, but I wouldn't eat them often.
  • Cool. Thanks for the advice. I had a turkey empanada, figuring I may save a handful of calories by doing that instead of the beef.

I'm pretty sure they are baked, but they probably do have lard in them since the owner seems to pride herself on being authentic.

Alas, this is the last one I'm having this month :D
