Heavy Lifting and weight loss...possible?

I would like to lose 10 more pounds but also want to tone up (especially before the summer). I am starting Stronglifts today so I know I will look better from lifting. Am I fooling myself thinking I can lift/tone and lose the 10lbs I want to lose?

No, you aren't fooling yourself exactly. You can lose 10 lbs of fat and gain a few lbs of water\nutrient storage in your muscle tissue. Net weight loss will be smaller but the fat loss will happen and the looking better will happen.0

Heavy lifting while eating at a calorie deficit doesn't build muscle, it helps you to retain what muscle you have while your body burns off fat instead. During this time you will be gaining strength, but not muscle mass or definition. Once you've lost the amount of fat you're comfortable with, increase your calories to maintenance or slightly higher and continue lifting. This will make your muscles super sexy!
In t he meantime, it is definitely the right way to go. Losing fat while maintaining muscle will give you the flat belly and make you less lumpy. Beyond the fat loss is where you'll really start seeing that "toning" going on.0 -

Thats what I've been doing coupled with a little bit of cardio twice a week, but make sure you have good nutrition and your in a caloric deficit.0

Of course it's possible.0

You might surprise yourself and find you don't need to lose 10 pounds.0

how you look is a direct result of how you eat.0

I was a cardio queen not really losing any weight and I was unhappy with the way I looked. So, with inspiration from some wonderful people on this site I started Stronglifts, upped my calories(averaging 2000 a day), dropped the cardio and weight is still coming off.
Its definitely possible and absolutely worth it0 -
Yes, definitely possible, because I am doing it now. I have still lost 1 lb a week whilst doing Stronglifts 5 x 5. My goal was to be around 150 lbs at which weight I usually fit into size 12 UK. I still have 14 lbs to go to goal and I am already in size 12 UK.0

I'm not sure what your definition of "heavy" is but i've been doing cardio and lifting what i consisder to be "heavy" since i started my journey. 70 pounds later i'm hear to tell you its possible. Now i will say this...As i get closer to my idea weight i can see more definition but notice that the 3 and 4 lb loss weeks are now one and 1 and 2 lb. I'm happy with it though cause like most said you will gaing the muscle and toning but the fat might come off a little slower...but thats why the cardio is important too i think0

Thanks everyone for all the great feedback. Congrats to each of you on your success...keep it up!0

You probably wont lose 10 pounds but you will lose inches... Which is better... So you'll just "look" like you lost 10 pounds0

Yes you can. I lifted my whole time when losing weight.
Thanks for this detail, and the profile pic to show it.0 -
