Anyone else live on a boat or have a nomatic lifestyle?

We live full time on a boat and travel almost all of the time. We will have been parked for 3 months which is a long time for us. Prior to this the longest was 2 weeks. I needed a break and time to begin to deal with this weight and to make lifestyle changes. By the end of March we start heading north again. I have to start now to transition and incorporate the exercise that I need to continue to loose weight into our nomadic lifestyle. What types of exercise do you and how do you make it work for you? Feel free to send a friend request as I would like to get to know other vagabonds.

This is actually something that my husband and I have talked about doing one day. Maybe not for the entire year, but for big chunks at a time. We'd like to get a sailboat and go all over the place, maybe make a documentary. One thing I would probably do for fitness on a boat is body resistance exercises, including lunges, squats, crunches, and exercises using resistance bands. You can get videos for that or access them on youtube if you have satellite internet. Plus swimming is always a great exercise. Food is definitely a big factor in weight loss and maybe living on a boat could be beneficial in that respect as you can't just run out for fast food or down to the store for junk food.

I think it's really cool that you're living this lifestyle and find it very inspiring!

    I wish.
  • Ohohoh! That is me! My husband and i are gold miners and 6 months of the year we travel from claim to claim
I just started this journey but have bought a jump rope, a kettle bell that you fill with sand to adjust the weight and a yoga mat. We also have a solar pad so we can charge the dvd player so i will be picking up some videos. I also have a body weight routine that i do everyother day. My exercise goal was to spend little to no money and keep it light weight and portable. Feel free to add me if you would like.

That's awesome! I so wish I was sailing around the world on a boat....it sounds magical. But I'm sure there are a few drawbacks to the vagabond lifestyle as well.

I'd suggest kettlebell training and perhaps resistance bands, and maybe doing a bit of brisk walking or jogging. All that stuff is small and portable, so it won't take up much space on your boat, and you can do it anywhere.

You could also simply do bodyweight exercises. There is a book called You Are Your Own Gym, by Mark Lauren. Great book, and a challenging and very effective way to build strength. Combine that with your walking or running, and you've got it!
  • i didn't realize they made the kettle balls that you could add sand to increase the weight. This is certainly a different lifestyle but an enjoyable one.

There are yoga for boaters videos available.

Is it warm and safe enough to swim where you are? That is our main exercise when we are out on the boat. Well, that and we are sailors, so there is always a line to tend.

I would think resistance bands or tubes would be your best bet for strength training, as they won't add any weight.
