Disgusted w/ myself

I did this 2 years ago. I lost 50 pounds. I've gained back 51. I'm miserable. I'm heavier than I've ever been. Disgusted with myself.

Anybody yo-yo and then finally succeed in keeping the weight off? I've never yo-yo'd before as I have always been heavy. Any tips you have to offer would be fantastic!

    Sorry you regained your weight. My only advice is to make changes that you can do for the rest of your life and don't look at it like a diet. If you lost the weight before and regained, I'm guessing you went back to your old habits. You did it before, you can do it again.

    I have lots of excuses - I lost it very slow and very smart. Small daily changes, took almost 1 year to lose 50 pounds. Changed everything about how I viewed food & addictions. Then I broke out with some strange un-diagnosed rash all over my body. 4 specialists and 5 rounds of steroids later, I look up and have gained 22 pounds back. After that, I think I went into survival & comfort mode just eating to keep my mind off of the itching.

    Don't be disgusted with yourself!! You can be disappointed, but not disgusted. It's not an easy road for anyone, but you did it before and you can absolutely do it again!! You didn't lose it over night and you didn't gain it back over night. So it'll take time. Just be patient, and set small goals...make lifestyle changes.

    Just do the best you can every day. If you have a bad day, shake it off, let it go, and start fresh tomorrow!

    I did it. I lost this weight slowly with a moderate caloric deficit and while training to run a half-marathon. Progress was so slow and it has hard to hit a calorie window. I have some manner of oppositional-defiance disorder. Any time I would reach my max, it made me want to eat more. I just hated every second of it. As soon as I was at my goal, I stopped paying attention.

    Now, I am doing a fairly extreme deficit with no cardio. The weight is coming off quickly and I feel fantastic. I feel optomistic. I even feel excited about the maintenance phase and want to start sculpting my body and stuff.

    I think that is the trick. You have to find a weight loss plan that you don't burn out on. It will be very different from person to person. There are definitely people who would burn out on my current plan and love the plan I burned out on.

    I can relate to the "disgusted with myself" title, so I had to respond. I am down on myself all the time about my weight, but then give up after a week of good eating because "it's too hard". Yet I know that's baloney, really. Trying to take the long view of how much better I'll feel when I get there.

    My best friend also lost a lot & regained it, & she too was down in the dumps about it. However, after being bummed out about it for awhile, she's starting to lose the weight again. Her issue was going back to her "old ways" instead of making the changes permanent. (I understand the mindset....now that I've lost the weight I can finally eat hot fudge sundaes with wild abandon!....unfortunately it backfires)

    I really admire you for losing 50lbs! You can do it again! Hang in there!!

    You are not alone. I lost over 50lbs 2 years ago, and gained back 20. I am still not over it even though I have since lost 6 of those 20lbs.

    Have you gotten any info on the rash? A girl I work with lost 70 lbs and then got a hives like rash, undiagnosed and she gained some back. Just wondering if it is the same thing, hers just went away but if and when she has a strong sweaty workout it comes back

    First off - don't be disgusted with yourself - learn from it and move forward.

    Second, I have done the exact same thing but re-gained far past what you re-gained and the fact that you came back to MFP means you recognize you need to do something about it.

    I have come to realize that I have to be conscious of not only what I put into my body but exercise is the key to actually feeling good about myself. At first I was just calculating the food I was eating and lost some weight but now I am slowly getting myself into exercising and calculating the food I eat and I find I am making much better choices because I've worked hard and don't want to blow it.

    Good luck in your health and just stay true to yourself and your body.

    Its a journey for all of us. I lost 30 lbs several years ago and have put it back on and then some over time through no one's fault but my own. I had an injury but in some ways, that was an easy excuse. I know better and it doesnt change the 40+ lbs that I gained. There are plenty of us here focusing on the same thing. And as a very wise person said earlier - you have to look at it as a lifestyle change, not a diet. Welcome and you can do this!!!

    Steroids are the culprit my dear! My BF was on them for 5 years. He just held onto weight, whether he ate a lot or not. Then, when the doc finally switched his medication, the weight fell off of him. Don't worry about it too much. You know that you can do it, so just get focused again.

    That sounds like that disease that the film maker of "Fat sick and nearly dead" had. As well as other issues that he had.

    I agree with this completely and I'm in the same position. I figure at least I did it once and know how to lose it (and know I can do it!). Keep your chin up and don't be so hard on yourself. I look at this like a life long struggle and sometimes we'll have slip-ups due to medical reasons, emotional reasons, stress, job changes, etc...that might get in the way for a short period.

    I have recently done the same thing. I had health problems, then gained all the weight back + a couple extra. I have decided today is the new beginning, no more excuses. I kept it off for over a year the first time. If you want, friend me and we can motivate each other. Good luck!

    People have said this over and over...don't think of it as a diet but a lifestyle change.

    My weight loss is going slow but steady this time around because I won't do anything I know I can't sustain for the rest of my life. I'm learning how to make my favorite foods with better ingrediant and when I really want the fatty foods I have smaller portions. There will always be setbacks and bumps along the road. My advice is to find an exercise you really really enjoy and stick to it. Build up to exercise just don't jump in doing 60 minutes or more 7 days a week (although some people can do it, but I get really sick if I don't get rest). Start at 3 days a week for 30 minutes or whatever you can do that you can stick to it. Meal planning is important for me and helps me stay on track. Cookinglight.com, skinnytaste.com, and eatingwell.com have some great recipes.

    The most important thing is to listen to your body and do what works for YOU.

    Don't be so hard on yourself. So many of us do the same thing. Let it go, shake it off and start over.

    Six years ago, I lost 53.5lbs. I gained back 40 of it just by comfort eating, not exercising and slipping back into old bad habits. I started over again in October and I'm down 33 lbs. Seven more to go to get back to where I was. Another 75 to go after that.

    You can do this. Just remind yourself how good you felt before and start making those changes. Good luck to you in your journey!!

    I have done that 3 times now - lost weight and gained back even more! So, I feel your pain and know exactly where you are coming from. This time, I am doing it right - losing slowly and making the lifestyle changes that I need to keep it off. I have lost 47 pounds since last May, and I have 42 more to go. I joined MFP in January, and the support here from people/friends going through the same thing you are will help you mentally and physically. Just resolve that you CAN and WILL do this - for yourself, your health, and your future! You did it before, now you just need to do it the right way for LIFE! Good luck!

    I feel your pain...I had lost just under 100 lbs and fell off my routine because life got back in the way of health...I have watched the scales rise for the past 6 weeks...I am back up 12 pounds! It is scary how fast it can come back! Its been eye opening really...I am going to have to work harder to keep it off than I did to lose it in the first place...I too am disgusted with myself...but again...I am motivated to get back to my routine...and kick it up to the next level too! If I can do this...so can you...a bad meal is not a bad day...a bad day is not a bad week...see where I am going with this? (for me...a bad 6 weeks does not mean I am entitled to a bad year)...:smile:

    For the rash you can try a necklace from Hazelaid.ca They make their necklaces from hazel wood. Not sure exactly how it works but my son has skin rashes too but as long as he wears his necklace they are almost gone. Cleaned up his acne too.
    Just keep telling yourself you are not done quitting yet and start over

    Hi just dont give up . I lost ten and half stone 11 years ago and have kept it all except a stone off . im not saying its easy cos it really isnt but i feel so much better and never want to go to that dark place again ! Keep your chin up and get cracking ! Good luck
