Healthy vegetarian trapped in a fat persons body!

Hi, I'm Jena and I'm 24. I've struggled with my weight my entire life. About 7 years ago I decided to make a change and I lost 40 lbs (250-210). I felt fantastic and rode on that wave of success for awhile. I loved how everyone noticed the difference. I started caring about what I looked like and wanted desperately to lose more weight. However, since then I have had more failures than successes. Over the years, I have tried every diet and every workout regime I could find. I can usually lose about 10 lbs and then the plateau happens and I get so frustrated. But, I continued to learn a tremendous amount about nutrition and exercise. I've been vegetarian for almost a year and feel great because of it. I rarely eat processed food and buy organic whenever I can. There were times though (before being veg) that I was working out 6 days a week and eating a carefully organized meal plan prescribed by a nutritionist. Still, I had an extremely rough time losing weight. I thought maybe I had a thyroid problem, but that checked out fine. I am so sick of being a really healthy person in a fat person's body. My weight affects me every minute of the day. It controls my life and my view of myself. I have a lot going for me otherwise, yet I feel the weight cancels it all out. I'm the kind of person that rarely fails. Anything, I've ever put my mind to I have achieved. Except this. However, I think this time may be different. Since being vegetarian, my life has been crazy and I haven't been to go to the gym or monitor my calories. However, I have completely maintained for all that time. In the past, when I'm not working out or really watching what I eat, I gain. So, I really think the vegetarianism suits my body (also, I don't only eat carbs and cheese like so vegetarians! I actually eat a lot of vegetables and tofu, etc). I started using MFP on my iphone 6 days ago. I have really enjoyed entering everything and trying to stay within my 1250 calorie limit. It's been hard, but..........I've lost 7 pounds already!!! Wowsers! I think this may be it. I'm more ready than ever! I am going home this summer t to stay with my parents and work at their restaurant. They're committed to being healthy with me so this could be great! I leave in two weeks. I want to lose 15 by then. Then I have family coming into town a month later and want to lose another 10-15. More family a month later- hopefully another 8-10, and then I want to be down to 170 or less by the time I come back home on Sept 10. I can do it! Thanks for listening and I would love to share successes and frustrations with any of you.

It sounds like you already have the tools you need to succeed. I tried going vegetarian at the beginning of the year. It was my New Year's resolution actually. I failed, LOL!

That is amazing that you have lost seven pounds already! What do you think made the difference?

Well, because MFP has made me really accountable I am eating the right portion sizes and making sure I eat plenty of vegetables and fruits. They fill me up with less calories. For years I was constantly yo-yo dieting. Since I've taken a substantial amount of time off, I think my body is ready and it's a bit of a shock for me to be eating this well. I haven't even started working out yet. I'm just focusing on food until I go to my parents in two weeks. We'll see how it turns out..

Oh, OK that makes sense. Hmm I think you have inspired me to give it one more try. I have been slowly weening myself from pork and red meat. Red meat is more difficult than I thought it would be.

I think once you get to your parents, you will do even better. The fact that they support you and are going to do this with you is amazing. My mom-love her to death, but she thinks vegetables are "diet food". smh!

Everyone on here has such great advice. They think of things that I have never even heard of before. I'm sure your initial weight loss is just the start of great things to come. Good luck!
  • i am twice your age so my situation is a lot different than yours but...i was overweight growing up and at age 20 was sick of it and lost all my excess weight fell in love and all kinds of good stuff. in my 30s the weight started coming back and throughout my 40s i have been 300+ lbs. i never "dieted" again because my life was very unbalanced and i didn't want to get into any kind of a yo-yo cycle. now i have decided once and for all this is it. i am doing great on my diet, and myfitnesspal is awesome, but what is also really helping me is that i am prepping for the lapband surgery and know that whatever i lose i should be able to keep off because of the help the surgery will bring me. its not for everyone, nor will everyone's insurance cover it, but i am thrilled and eagerly awaiting my procedure.

remember you body needs fat too as an aid to burn calories and slim your waist.. good luck
  • wow, great job so far! I'm not sure if i could pull of being a vegetarian, but i think it was a good idea to maybe get off of the red meats. and as for me and support, have a brother that will pester me until i do some form of aerobics and since i am basically the only one cooking, i can make healthy meals for me and force all others to eat.. but it's great that you have your parents, you can all nag eachother to eat well and get active :) my best freind is my work out buddy, granted she's trying to gain weight but i'm glad she still belives in working out. anyway i wish you the best on your journey

Congrats on your weight loss so far! I've tried the vegetarian thing in the past, but I was the type that just had cheese, bread, and pasta, and it actually made me even less healthy. I currently only eat chicken but I hope to continually eat less and less and find healthy substitutes. I'm fairly new to MFP as well and I feel like it's really helping me stay accountable for what I'm eating, between keeping a food journal and posting on the forums. Best of luck!

    Hey girl!

We pretty much have the exact same story, though I am a pescatarian! It is totally frustrating. I too would like to be at 17O by September, and 160 by my birthday, September 24th. Maybe we could swap some good vegetarian recipes some time!

HI! I am also a vegetarian trying to lose weight!!! I lost 45lbs a year ago and gained it all back with my last pregnancy. I was WAY to happy to pack on them pounds!

You can do it! We both can. I know how you feel that it consumes your life. I actually feel I have wasted years of my life on being fat. I literally have not done things or gone places because of it. I feel my self consciousness has severely lowered my quality of life.

    Friend me!!

    ((HUGS))!!!

I am so glad to hear you are preparing yourself before hand to get ready for your surgery. I have a aunt and a cousin whichmy aunt had gasteric bypass and my cousin had lap band but neither learned anything about nutrition and have both put back on the lbs. it's so sad because these are serious surgeries that they under went and took it for granted my cousin ate everything the same SMH she just couldn't eat it all in one sitting so pretty much learned nothing. So I am so glad to hear you are focused on your diet prior to surgery I wish you well with everything and your weightloss success!!!
  • Hi MsJena sounds like things are starting to fall in place for you great job going a whole year being a vegetarian that is awesome I tried the vegan lifestyle for a few short weeks and decided it is not for me I can try being a pesketerian but I don't think I can give up all meat. So my hat's off to you and I hope once you put the workouts back in place the weight will just start melting off of you. You already figured out how important the diet is to have in place as you have already shed 7lbs because of it so the workouts are the bonus I wish you well and I hope you reach all the goals you set for yourself........You can do it!!!:drinker:

    Hi Jena,

I am completely impressed by your weight loss so far! I've just joined this forum and started using the app (and I am also a vegetarian) so your success was very encouraging. Keep up the good work!
