my husband has started this healthy eating to lose some weight, he has stuck to the 1800 cals per day adised, but due to his exercise he some times has over 400 cals to eat at the end of the day, which is not good, does he have to eat back these extra cals and will he still lose weight. he has lost 8lbs in past 2 weeks but has not lost any this week, please help.

hi there, i try not to eat back my calories. But sometimes i do espcially at the weekend. He has to make sure that he is buring more than he is consuming. Obviously when he entred his details he put how much weight he wanted to lose each week (mine is 1lb) and how much exercise he will be doing each week, and how active he is with his job, and this is how myfitness pal judge how many calories to consum. If he put in that he is going to exercise like 5 times plus a week i would recommened not to eat back calories, as thats why 1800 calories he has to consum. But we all have days when we go over our calories. I hope this has helped a little. Feel free to add me if you need any more advise i log daily. Good luck x0

thank you for the help will let you know how he gets on0

I eat back some of my exercise calories, if not my body goes into starvation mode and I end up putting weight on0

If he included exercise when he calculated the 1800 cals, then no, he shouldn't be eating them back (and can stop logging them if he wants). If he didn't include exercise when calculating his goal, then yes he should be eating them back.0

I think that the program is designed to let you eat extra when you have extra activity. Of course this will not be accurate if you are not accurate on you calorie intake record, or if your basic activity level is less than you selected when you calculated your BMR, or if you are over estimating your activity calorie burn. It is a balancing act to end up eating 500-1000 calories under what you burn but not going so far under that you burn muscle instead of fat. If you are losing weight and feeling like you have good energy then you are probably close to being in the fat burn window.0

MFP is set up for you to eat your exercise calories back as your deficit is already built into the figure given to you. Your husband should be eating his exercise calories back so he can reduce the amount of muscle he loses in the process of trying to lose weight.0

This is incorrect. MFP does NOT account for exercise until you enter it in your exercise diary (unless you customize your settings). Your calorie goal is only based on your daily activity WITHOUT exercise (again, unless you customize). The goal you enter for your exercise is simply something to remind you of that goal - it does not change your initial calorie goal (try going in and changing your exercise goal, it does not affect the calories). So, assuming your husband set up MFP as intended and has not customized - YES, eat exercise calories back, at least 50%.0 -

GET OUT THE MEASURING TAPE! Sometimes even if the scale doesnt show a loss the measuring tape will! Start recording asap, sometimes it's much more rewarding!0 -
hi i am new to this i have 1200 cals each day which i have stuck too for the past 7 weeks, i have logged that i exercise at the gym x3 a week. i lost 5lbs in the first 5 wks and have not lost anymore since. can anyone let me know what im doing wrong please.0

I usually am in the same boat. Some days I eat back the exercise calories...some days I don't. It depends on how hungry I am. The only difference it SHOULD make is how fast one will lose weight. Keep in mind that hardly anyone loses on a consistant basis. It's also normal to see faster weight loss in the beginning. Some weeks I even gained a pound without going over my goal. in calories However, my average is right at 1 pound per week over 10 weeks. I'm more than happy with that!
Tell him to stick with it and not be concerned with variations in weight loss. It will average out over the long haul.
Good luck!0 -

I always eat all my calories. I see no reason not to.
When I was losing weight - if I ate just 1200 calories on days I wasn't working out, it made sense to net 1200 on days that I did. Same net. Same loss.
I don't get why people don't eat their calories, I just don't. There is no reason to be afraid of eating, especially if you're working out a lot.0 -
You are right...MFP gives you the amount of calories you should eat WITHOUT exercising...That means if you are giving 1200 calories you can eat that amount WITHOUT exercise and still lose weight...If you exercise and burn 700 calories you can eat that plus the 1200 they give you and still lose weight...However I never eat up all my exercise calories or at least try not too as I want to lose weight at a faster rate...0

Some days, when I have exercised and have more calories that I can safely eat, I'm simply too full to eat more. I'm not "afraid" of eating...I'm just FULL.0 -
thank you everyone it makes sense a little more now, maybe now i can start losing again0
