Ground Beef Calorie Count

If you buy the high fat % ground beef and strain the meat does the calorie count go down or stay what the package says? I've heard this before but not sure if it's true.
I continue to buy only 90-93% lean just encase but was wondering if I could save some money there.

not sure about that but if you grill it and press it to get some of the grease out it loses alot of fat0

I think its loses fat because you can see it melt off but it can also be losing a little water also. I tried to research ways to find out how much so I could estimate but I didn't find anything so i just use what the package says.0

I am under the impression that as you cook the beef and the fat runs out then your finished burger or crumbles will have less calories and fat than the label. If you log it as raw ground beef, then you would be logging too much fat/calories. In the database you can search:
Beef - ground, cooked. then you will see choices for the different levels of the raw lean/fat content. I believe most fo them were taken from the USDA nutrient database. The entry's with NO asterisk, we ones that the originators put in and come from this database.
for example search this: Beef - Ground, 80% lean meat / 20% fat, patty, cooked, broiled (hamburger)
Hope that helps.
You can also just go to the USDA nutrient database and search for both raw and cooked to compare

I could not find a setting in the data base for cooked ground beef that has been drained of fat. But think about it. Not sure it would save money to buy the cheaper (and higher fat content) package. You'd be discarding the fat portion and you'd have less lean for the money you spent. One way to figure it out ....you could drain the fat from the pan and measure it. A Tablespoon of fat is about 100 calories so you could make your own "food", "meal", or recipe with the fat removed.0
