600 Calories Left But Over Protien and Fat Allowance

I occasionally find myself with several hundred calories remaining at the end of the day. Oftentimes when that happens, I am already over my fat and protein allowance. What should my approach be to reduce the calorie deficit? I know I could eat almond butter or other foods high in calories, but they are typically high in fat and protein. Should I not concern myself with going over my fat and protein allowances?

  • I find the standard macros are too low on protein based on everything I have read, so I wouldn't be too concerned with that. A lot of websites have indicated eating 1 X your body weight is actually ideal for you body to gain muscle and lose weight.

I am having the same problem. I am not hungry but since I have been trying to do lowcarb, some days I eat less than 1000 calories but am over on fat.

MFP has my protein allowance set at 62 grams. I weigh 205 lbs. So based on 1x my body weight, I should be ok if I go over by 20 g.

Eat the protein! That has been a big helper to me. The more I log protein and work out, the more I realize I was under feeding my muscles. I can't tell you how amazed I am with my body lately.

I am eating low carbs too and I think that may be one of the reasons our calories are low but our fat is high.

Being over on protein is not a problem. MFP's protein number is set too low for most people. I think the recommended amount is about 1 gram per pound of body weight. I wouldn't worry about going over in protein. If you're eating well, you should be going over MFP's protein level every day.

As for fat, remember to separate "good" from "bad" fat. Not all fat is created equal. Most of the fat in almond butter is "good." Here's the URL with good info about fats: http://www.webmd.com/diet/features/skinny-fat-good-fats-bad-fats

While you still want to watch all fat intake, the saturated fat is the really evil one you want to not go over in.

At least that's my take. I'm no expert, but this is what I've learned and have experienced personally.
  • I agree with anner53108 above. MFP doesn’t necessarily take into consideration a low carb diet which I myself am on. A lot of articles online recommend for you to actually increase your intake of healthy fats such as nuts, avocado, etc. So if you’re working out and staying true to your low carb diet you may be deficit in your caloric intake but your fats will more than likely be up. Just try to avoid the bad fats. :-)

Thanks so much for the information. I have been struggling to keep everything balanced. I will definitely focus on eating more "good" fat and less "bad" fat.

Half my fat and protein today came from almonds but they were not plain almonds. They were Blue Diamond Rosemary and Black Pepper Seasoned Almonds. I don't know if that's bad or good fat since they contained vegetable oil.

Thanks for responding. I ate a bunch of almonds today that contained vegetable oil. Does the vegetable oil cancel out the "good" fat contained in plain almonds?
