Which type of fat is harder to get rid of? Wibby wobbly jelly like fat, or hard fat belly fat?
I am (was) wibbly wobbly and DH is hard belly fat.
He is 6ft and weighs 15stone (210 lbs) he is very broad and is not big all over, but looks like he is carrying a baby and his belly does not jiggle (I am so giggling at writing this LOL)
I had more the wobbly belly that you could poke and watch the ripples... (Mums I am sure you know what I mean! LOL) anyway, I have lost a lot of weight, now I am trying to tighten up.
DH does want to lose weight (well mainly his belly) but what is easier to lose as I personally found losing my weight relatively easy with will power.

Hahaha I have no idea but what a lovely post. Wibbly wobbly fat - lol.0

fat is fat- its how people carry it! he will likely lose quicker simply because he is a man (unfair, i know...but its typical)0

Cute..men's belly are most of the time hard (my hubby too looks like 8 month pregnant) while women are mostly wibbly wobbly (more flexible) that's the reason we give birth to babies and not them.0

That may not be the best description of where it's really at, but there is different types.

Ahhh, I will tell him that as our fat has been a a bit of a debate, he ksaid to me that I lost weight easy because my fat was soft but his fat is hard...
I pay for him to go to the gym I go to, you get a special key that you plug in to all the machines and it has your own personal programme on it, then you "check" out and it gives you a break down of your workout, which I think is great! DH has been ONCE, but says he is going back on Saturday, he wants to eat healthier, but this next two weeks has jury service, so with the allowance they give him for food he has eaten rubbish!
He has 101 days before he set off on our jollies!0 -
Subcutaneous fat is found right beneath the skin. Since it is beneath the skin it is jiggly and soft because there is nothing much keeping it in place.
Visceral fat is found between internal organs. Because it is deep within the body it is very hard.
Since Visceral fat is around your organs and near your waistline it is generally going to be the hardest fat to get rid of, not necessarily because of type but location.
Oh bum... I won't tell him that LOL...0 -
Yep, I was told men carry their belly fat under a layer of muscle which is why it feels hard. Hubby always says his belly was a six pack that turned into a keg. I worry about him....but he's not quite ready to try losing it. I just want him around for as long as possible.0
-
Doesn't really matter. The prescription to get rid of both is the same. Calorie deficit combined with exercise will conquer both types. A year ago my friends and I made our goals fun with a silly bet. She has to lose 10 pounds of jiggly fat, he had to gain 10 pounds of muscle, I had to lose 20 pounds of hard belly fat. Try the same with your husband.0

*Edit: Also subcutaneous fat is considered the "protective fat" that isn't as dangerous as Visceral.
You know those few extra pounds girls carry around their hips and thighs because of our genetics? That's the subcutaneous fat.
Bump. Exactly ...0 -
There is only two kinds of fat: visible and non. I think fat that seems firmer is just excess fat growing over muscle or perhaps muscle growing underneath whereas "woobly" fat is primarily fat and no muscle beneath it. Muscle burns fat so I'd say the person with "firmer" fat may have an easier time burning fat if there is muscle.0

^^^ this - re. hard belly fat = visceral fat (usually) = worse health risk
having said that, I read recently that when you lose weight, the visceral fat usually comes off first, which is why even losing just 10% of your body weight can have significant health benefits. Visceral fat is located in the abdomen around the abdominal organs and close to the liver, and it has a high blood flow, which (the article said) is why it's lost more easily than subcutaneous fat. That may not be true for everyone though.... so it's probably a safer bet to try to get to an all round healthy body fat percentage and if you tend to carry fat in your abdomen, this applies even more.
Also, people who are fat but fit, according to some studies, have a lot of subcutaneous fat, but very little visceral fat. This suggests that exercising regularly may prevent the build up of visceral fat. BTW I just read this online, I haven't seen any of the actual journal articles, so I wouldn't advise relying on this information.... better to aim for a healthy body fat percentage IMO0 -
If your hubby follows mfp calorie counting his will soon shift. I had big beer belly last August, all gone now and down to 36" waist jeans and under 13 stones [182lbs] He may find it easier than you, just the way it is for us blokes0

I have to be a bit of a downer here, and tell you his build is the kind that's the most dangerous to your health. I have to tell you this, because it reminds me of my dad. He has that build, and made half-hearted attempts to lose weight for almost 20 years. In his early 50s, he went from having no other health issues at all to having a type of diabetes that is extremely difficult to control. He had numerous strokes as a result, and has required constant care since he was 58. A little foresight (or listening) could've prevented what happened to him. I really hope your husband gets serious about his health. It's a matter of when, not if, it leads him down a very rough road.0 -
Fat is fat and has to GO!!! ELIMINATE FAT jiggly, wobbly or hard, however you find it.
I'm becoming a fat Nazi (not a Nazi who is fat, but ..... oh never mind!) and a healthy eating Evangelist (no not a.................why am I explaining myself?).
Anti fat and pro healthy eating, Hallelujah!!0 -
My fat used to be firmer but now that i've lost 60 lbs it's softer as the fat cells have shrunk. Kinda like deflating a balloon. When it's full of air it's firm, when it's not as full it is softer and squishier.0
-
Like this? I'm 6ft was 250 about in sept but didnt start with MFP till dec when i was 230.
Moderate diet and some heavy weights 3 times a week has been getting rid of it for me. Like other people said fat is fat. Just need a calorie deficit to lose it. The lifting just makes you look better at the end.0 -

In closing, the others are correct about the fat around the organs, but the bloat (pregnant bloat seems to be maybe candida, fat or both). Hard to say without seeing his body with his shirt off and touching it so I can't say for sure.0 -
Doesn't matter whether it's jiggly or hard. Fat is fat and neither type is easier to burn.
Men do lose fat easier and quicker than women though.0 -

He looks EXACTLY like that!!!
He has now cut out beer, only has it when we go out (he used to have a couple of cans on the weekend and maybe one or two in the week) He stopped smoking last year and I think some of his weight and extra eating can be attributed to that. At work he would nip out for a smoke, but now has a bag of crisps! He is slowly changing the crisps to a banana (he just learning to like healthy food LOL)
I will definitely show him this thread, he is on MFP but sort of starts then stops, it was actually him that got me on here.
Also the to person who mentioned their Dad... My DH has never had any health worries, in fact it is me who has all the health problems (stage 3 kidney disease) I think knowing what happened to your Dad will scare him!
I know he wants to lose weight, he just needs a kick up the bum, once he gets going he will gain momentum and carry on.0
