You may not like that, but being a Diabetic and wanting to loose you should make at least some of your meals yourself. I can't see how else you can balance the diabetic nutritional needs and the diet. The risk just buying food and not cooking is that it will be "bad" on either one of these to sides of the equation. Even worse, exercise is even more important for you than for someone who is not diabetic. I suggest that you talk with your physician and see if he can get you some help as far as nutritional advise goes. I can tell you already that he will tell you to do exercise as well. Sorry. I see to many people who do not control their diabetes properly, so maybe I am a bet over cautious.0

I'm Type 2--have been for 6 years. On pills for it. My sister is type 2 on insulin. My mother died from diabetes.
Words of advice:
Get your levels down or you risk serious health issues and eventually death due to diabetic related complications (kidneys shut down, amputations, heart disease, etc.)
Is that strong? Yes. Is it true. Very much so.
You need to go see a dietitian and find out what foods you can and can't eat.
You MUST get away from the fast foods, particularly the subs. It's not just sugar--it's also carbs, like bread, potatoes, pasta, etc. White bread, bread of any kind really, will cause my level to go sky high.
Each diabetic is unique, too. But for all of us, carbs are killers--you simply can't have that many per day and keep your levels down. So, get rid of the subs and fast foods.
At those levels, you should be having no more than 15 to 30 carbs a meal until your levels come down.
You also need to watch sodium, as diabetics are more likely to develop other issues like high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney issues, etc.
You're not that overweight, although I'm not sure how tall you are so your levels should be fairly easy to get down with proper food control and exercise.
If you don't want insulin, ask about pills. If you don't want to have to eventually go on insulin, then you need to control your levels NOW with diet and pills, until such time you can control it with diet alone.
And, start exercising. Even walking is better then nothing.
After almost 3 months of finally getting my head right and finally eating healthy, I've gotten my levels down to normal and the doctor has reduced my pills by 1/2.
And welcome to the site0 -
I was just told 31/2 months ago I was type 2 as well. Exercise alone has helped me lower my levels. Walking is great I now do it for at least an hour a day started out 20 min and worked up from there. I also had to cut sugar and eat lots of veggies. You have to want not to be on meds. I will know if loosing the weight worked at the end of the month.0

Sindy,
I hope you're succesfull! Diabetes is horrible disease! I'm really hoping to finally lose all my weight and get off meds completely but not sure--might be too late for my pancreas already.
The early you take action against diabetes, the better is it. I knew that and still did little to nothing for years. Now I live in fear of reprecussions for my inaction. Finally, seeing a lady at church who is only 10 years older then me have serious issues with her diabetes put me in motion. She just went an insulin pump and is developing kidney problems now. YIKES! Scared the you-know-what out of me!0 -

Thank you I will be successful my mother has been doing it all my life. It is good for me but my sisters and brother were not so lucky and I am so afraid for them because they are not as determind as I am to control it. I pray that they wake up and see all they have to do is take care of them selves. I am hoping by the end of this month my doctors says that I dont have to be medicated, but I will continue to take care of myself either way. It feels sooo good. :drinker:0 -
I got my DX in April. Since my mom was dx 3 years ago I knew it was coming. :ohwell:
I have found that you can eat out and not cook a lot IF you plan ahead. I spent a lot of time looking up favorite restaurants on the internet and getting manuals until I came up with a game plan for when my 3 teens want to be somewhere other than home (I am getting ready to start a 4 week vacation with them.) The Crock pot has always been one of my best freinds and it is in use all the time because I can throw it together and then run for the day. My daughter and I went flexatarian right about the same time as the DX- (only chicken and fish- no red meat or pork) I know that this has helped to make me healthier too as I tend to overeat beef and pork.:noway:
I carry a bag with with me at all times that has my healthy snacks (not all are fresh many are store boughten) for when I need something. I carry a variety so that I have a choice whenever- choices are key for me.
Water is the other key ingredient- the more I drink water or water with crystal light or any of the other favorings that are sugar free- the less I eat. I have 4 different water bottles to carry around as I need them. :drinker: :drinker: :drinker: :drinker:
The dietician is the most wonderful person- he/she isn't there to deprive you, but to give you facts and healthy choices.
I am not perfect- no one is- but I remind myself of my Great Aunt who I remember as blind and having only one leg due to diabetes- I don't want my future grandchildren to remember me that way. Also since I started with MFP, I feel better, my clothes are loose and I am still keeping up with my Girl Scouts and Students.:drinker:0 -
Thank you Shorerider and sindy for your clear statement. Coming from someone who has Diabetes himself weights so much more than my experience in the hospital and from my textbooks.
The important part is that there is A LOT that can be done, many people very successfully control their diabetes very successful. But is is hard.
Not doing anything ( = diet, exercise, control of the diabetes with meds and regular medical check ups) will for sure get you on a downhill slope that gets steep real fast.
I wish I could take you with me to work and show you some people who did not control their diabetes. That will for sure convince anybody.0 -
I just feel that I am in control of me and I can change my life style and still enjoy the foods I like. I know I will be around for my kids and will be healthy. Will power of steal (hehehe most of the time):drinker:0
