Had to put my scale away...so discouraging

As most of you, I'm here because I need to lose weight. It's been a constant battle for years. No excuses, I have all the information I need. I tried way too many "diets", exercise fads and in general just lacked conviction and discipline to lose the weight. So, I found a 12-week program on BodyBuilding.Com and started it on 1/29/, started logging all my food (on Fitday and just switched to MFP) and have been trying to get on track. I am really getting extremely discouraged with my scale though. I logged on 1/11/13 that I was 205.6 and then on 2/23/13 I was 197. Great! But since then, my weight has gone back up and for two weeks I've been between 202 - 199. UGH. And, I am measuring myself. On 1/21/13 my hips were 46 and now they are 45 so I've lost an inch but, a few others spots have gone up a few small nudges on the tape. Anyway. Point being, I am having a REALLY bad week this week. Sorta binged this past weekend because I'm feeling defeated, then I got back on track Monday and have been fighting with myself all week. I want to lose weight, I want to meet my goals, I want to be healthy but... I feel so defeated. Oh, and I have PCOS which makes it twice as hard to lose weigh also. This morning, I put my scale away and I'm not going to weigh myself for 2 weeks at least. I guess I just needed to vent. Thanks.

The scale is like crack, it's so habit forming and addictive when all you want is to lose pounds!

stick with no weighing for two weeks. I think that's a great idea. measure yourself once a week for two weeks and dont stress on it!!! drink lots of water, hold down your sodium and watch your calorie intake.
Keep up with any exercise activities you can continue with and stay motivated.

    Screw the scale!!!

I recently found bodybuilding.com myself and it got me very excited and motivated. Like you, I formed a habit of weighing myself much too frequently, I should probably do the same as you and put it away. Using myfitness pal to keep track of your cardio, strength and calorie intake should be the only thing we look at on a daily basis!

The scale, as you know, can be a bit deceiving; for example, I've been sticking with this routine and calorie intake for 1 week and a half and even though the scale did not budge at all, I (as well as my family) can see my face getting thinner. A friend of mine has been religious with his fitness routine for about 4 weeks. He admits to not losing that many pounds but sees and feels the inches coming off by feeling how his clothes fit. We are building muscle, and muscle weighs as well.

I know the feeling of defeat; it's no fun. But own it; true defeat only happens when you don't get back up to fight. You got this, keep doing your cardio in the AM, drink water, make sure your keeping track of your protein fat and carbs. And like Meredith said, weigh yourself every 2 weeks, keeping it hidden most of the time, lol.

The scale is a killer for motivation!! Take photos every two weeks...I know it's easier said than done...I have literally cried after stepping off the scale, but you gotta let it go. You know that your PCOS will make this more difficult for you. You know that you've been down this road before. The key is to react differently this time. That will be the change. Instead of becoming so discouraged that you binge (boy, have I been there)...let it motivate you to work harder. Don't let that scale beat you and don't let it psych you out. Because even if it takes 5 years, those will be 5 healthful years and you'll feel so much better.

PCOS is tricky. Look into the book the Sugar Solution. Basically when you eat 15 grams of carbs, eat 7 grams of protein at the same time, every time you eat. For example, if you eat an apple, have some sunflower seeds too. Or, if you eat a piece of toast in the morning, make sure to have egg with it. The protein balances your blood sugar, which controls all your other hormones. Eating this way will really help get your hormones back in control, and that will result in weight loss... trust me, it's been a battle for years and I've finally figured out this really works!

I agree about putting the scale away for a few weeks. Concentrate on making healthy choices and don't beat yourself up over a bad weekend. We all have them. You just get back on track and keep doing what you know is right.

    You can do it!!

While scale weight is a "tool" to see progress for some, it can become the "live or die" boon to others. Think of it this way: if you look good, fit the clothes you want and are comfortable with that look, then does scale weight really matter? Go for the fitness. The weight will take care of itself if you're eating right.
