Some people shouldn't have pets

Today should've have been a great day. I was feeling wonderful after being in bed for a week with a neck injury and I was with my beautiful daughter Meaghan at her new house doing demolition work. We see out in the yard this beautiful chocolate lab just bouncing around just as happy as she could be. We went outside and she was so playful, sweet, friendly, and well mannered. She sat, let us pet her, gave us her paw, stopped jumping when we asked her not to, just a wonderful dog. We called the number on her collar and the owner came to get her. Autumn, the lab, had apparently gotten out before and crossed a major road to get to my daughter's neighbor's house. The neighbor apparently has chickens that Amber enjoyed barking at. He took Autumn home assuring us she would be safely locked in the back yard and not get out again. Well not two hours later there was a huge pileup on this road adjacent to my daughters road and that poor dog had gotten loose and hit by a car. The woman who hit her was so distraught and kept on apologizing. She just said the dog came out of nowhere. A wonderful Good Samaritan who just happened to be a horse vet wrapped her in a blanket and took her to a vet. I tried calling the owner to no avail. I finally left a voicemail and just now got a call back. I had left a number on his business line, the only number I had. When he called back he said, "I missed a call from this number. Who are you?" I explained who I was and how upset my daughter and I were. How we had asked for prayers for this dog on several social networking sites. For whatever reason the few minutes we spent with Autumn she touched our hearts. Have you ever met a dog like that? They are special and to be treasured. After telling him who I was, he abruptly said, "She didn't make it, We are eating dinner." Then I heard a dial tone. Really???? Really????? Really???? hang on up on someone who cared enough about your dog to call you the first time and then try to find out how she was. I tried to put myself in his shoes and that he might have been upset but I can't fathom ever being that rude to someone no matter how upset I was if that person had been so kind to my pet. Am I wrong?

Anyway I am really just venting and so sad this dog is gone.

    I am so sorry.
We live on a busy road, and once I chased one of my dogs barefoot in the snow to keep it safe and get it back. Sometimes dogs find a way out, you don't know about. We took steps after this, but over the years there have been some close calls. Every system can fail.

I totally agree. I just don't understand how people can look at pets as just "a dog" or just "a cat". My dogs are the most loyal and loving furry little babies and it's been heartbreaking to lose each one. It says so much about the type of people that you and your daughter are in dealing with today's events. Bless you both! RIP Autumn.

Mother****er. I'd knock someone's teeth out for reacting like that. If you are not a good enough person to show remorse for the life you contracted to care for when you took on the animal, then you are deeply negligent in having taken on the animal at all.

The string of words I normally would write would be all asterisk. I really hate people like that.

I have a dog and she is quite creative. She did get out at times but we took great pains for it not to happen again and now that she is a little bit older she doesn't have the energy. I could understand the dog getting out and as much as it hurt me to see her that way I could forgive the owner because things happen. But the way he was on the phone, I think it just shows his character. Or I might be just sensitive right.

Thanks Lisa :) Autumn is happy in doggy heaven now <3

You aren't saying anything I haven't said tonight. My daughter is beside herself. She said if we hadn't called him right away, Autumn would have stayed at her house and she would be ok.
