Starter Advice Please

Hello. I don't exercise at all now so am starting from zero, plus I am about 125 pounds overweight so everything is difficult.

I signed up to walk a 6K in 12 weeks.

What advise would give to help me get ready?

Thank you.

My advice is to just start moving. Take walks around your neighborhood, try jumping jacks or jump rope, find some stairs and walk up and down several times, anything that gets you moving and used to light/moderate activity. Daily activity is recommended. The more you do, the more you CAN do. Good luck.

You could try the couch to 5k program www.c25k.com/. It's for running, but you could just walk it quickly. Otherwise, just start walking, do what you can the first day and just add another block or 1/4 mile, whatever you can each time. Start out at least 3 days a week, more if you can. You might be surprised at how quickly you can build up. I still have 100 lbs to lose but I'm on week 3 of c25k and jogging up to 3 mins at time. If I can do it, so can you.

Thank you for your responses! I'm intimidated but I just need to start I guess. I appreciate your thoughts and encouragement.

Start with a little bit of activity and work you way up. Anoher helpful note is to try not to compare yourself to others. Everyone had to start from somewhere to get where they are.

Buy the pair of shoes and brand of socks you plan on wearing for the event and wear those when you "practice". Seems simplistic I guess, but it is something I've just done to myself entirely too many times :) Blisters are NO FUN.

    Good luck with your event!
