Insanity and Knee Pain

Options
I'm in my recovery week but i have noticed my knees beginning to ache a little when i would need to bend down or squat. my hips are also beginning to pop or crackle. I am in no means in any excruciating pain, but i cant help but wonder if that would begin to get worse once im into month 2 (3more days). I know form is most important which is something i pay extra attention to...

Can someone please let me know if you can relate, as well as provide some tips as to what i can do to ease the tension. I've read something about taking joint pain meds as well as incorporating yoga or anti inflammatory. Also i work out on carpet, any takes on if i should wear my shoes or be barefoot?

My right knee still bothers me after years of long distance running. Before starting Insanity I invested in a large floor mat and a soft Ace Support. So far after 4 days of Insanity I don't have any pain. I would modify any of the Insanity exercises that are hurting your knees.

Don't overdo it. Listen to your body.

I never listened to mine, and ended up having knee surgery, still didn't listen, and now I'm between a rock and a hard place, with not many options.

    Girl, its all that jumping!

I am having to break from insanity till Monday, at least. I am NOT happy...but my ankle is so swollen my socks cut in...and I could barely make it up the stairs. Try ice, elevation, and aleve.

I wont tell you to rest because if your like me, if you can move you'll be at it...but try to baby it some.

Yes, it will get worse. Yes, do wear shoes. It's jumping jumping jumping, and month 2 is at much more intense than month 1. I enjoyed Insanity a lot but it's not a long term fitness solution.

Amen! The RIGHT shoes...cross trainers for Insanity. this is why I don't recommend the program very much and why I haven't done it myself and I'm a Beachbody Coach. I could be selling away but if I can come up with a safer alternative for my customers, I do. It's a great program but not for anyone who has joint issues, excess weight, or newbies. If you're starting to feel knee pain, bag it and find something that can be modified for low impact for now. You don't wanna end up having to get knee surgery b/c once the damage is done, you knees will never be the same again.

Thanks everyone for your input... I do wear cross trainers, maybe i just new ones? And i dont intend to use it as a long term workout regimen but I do have intentions to do 2 rounds of it ((hopefully)) I don't have joint issues as far as i know and im not excessively over weight. I have no history of any knee problems physical deficiencies.... Before Insanity I would use the elliptical and participate in an interval spin class, so its not like i was not active at all and just dove into it. Im in recovery week, do you think that I should just finish the recovery and go from there?

I know the jumping is just so much impact but i try my best to land soft... How did you hurt your ankle? Any thing specific or did it just start to swell up and ache?? Yeah im not good at the resting lol. Ill deff take it a little easier on the jumps, but I really dont want to stop... Maybe i just need to drink more recovery drinks?

Not sure how I hurt it... I was hurting when I woe up one day and I thought, that's weird.. my ankles never have hurt before. Well later in the day it swelled up and I couldn't do the jumping jacks without wincing, so I kinda took an easy, then I killed it on Insanity for two days thinking maybe it was just the muscles down there.. but it isn't for sure, it's even more swollen and I couldn't walk right on it. I totally did not want to stop.. you know how pumped I was about my fit test results! I figured if I had to stop for a couple days and dive back in Monday it'll be worth it instead of having to stop all together if I push it too much.

    HI,

I also scare of using P90x for that reason, i use tae bo instead and it is also intense but doesn't really hurt my knees

I am a massage therapist so maybe I can help. Is your knee popping? Is there swelling? Pain is NOT normal - it is a signal. Please, Do NOT take pain meds to mask the pain without finding out what is going on. You could damage yourself badly. Also if your hip is in pain, that really concerns me too. That's not normal.

If you are feeling pain and if there is swelling you need to chill out IMMEDIATELY on what you are doing and have a specialist look at it asap. That can be VERY SERIOUS. If it is just cracking and mild pain without any swelling then give it a rest. and try some other form of exercise for a few days. You mentioned yoga. Try Pilates or something like that. See what happens. Please don't discount this and try to be brave. Just be cautious. No harm in being too safe here.

P.S. Please don't EVER go barefoot when you workout like this. Your food needs the shock resistance and support. What about buying a special mat to jump on in addition to wearing supportive shoes?

Check out your trainers. Go to a running shop and make sure your footwear is suitable for your feet.

One of the biggest causes of knee pain in runners is wrong trainers. Insanity is high impact training.

No my knees don't pop and are not swollen. Sometimes they crack like i popped a knuckle. My Hip pops like that too sometimes. Usually during hamstring stretches. I'm not in any severe pain. They're just soar.....almost fatigued i guess. Although day by day the aches progress a little. But again i am not in PAIN at all!! I am trying to be cautious which is why i figured i would ask the community to see if this is something that occurs with Insanity. I will definitely look into some type of mat for extra padding, i already work out on carpet and its very soft.. I was told that the knees will get stronger.....
