Ketosis

I am on a very low carb diet. It is not presented as a "low carb" diet but from the list of foods I can eat, there are very little carb choices. My cheeks are bright red! Does anyone know if this is normal? I don't have those ketone strips because, like I said, this diet does not present itself as a low carb diet. Mostly, it's a diet where you spend 14 days detoxing so you avoid certain foods. A friend of mine is an MD and she said it sounded like I was going through ketosis. I am on Day 4 and have lost 6 lbs, so it seems to be working. Yes, 6 lbs sounds like too much but I assume this is water weight.

Just wanted to add. My cheeks seemed to be getting redder and redder but they weren't bright red until today, which is Day 4.0

I never experienced red cheeks during ketosis but even without the strips ul know if yr bodies in ketosis if ur appetite has been suppressed and if yr constantly thirsty....
What diet is it by the way???0 -
I'm not sure if I would notice thirst because I am drinking lots of water constantly since starting this thing. It's called "Be Well" by Dr. Frank Lipman. Marketed as a cleanse but you can also eat but yes, my appetite has gone down. I keep forgetting to eat, whereas the first couple days I was ravenous.0

Yep: during the first few days when I was getting into ketosis, it looked like I had poison ivy on my face and that I had aged 30 years. When I was finally in ketosis, after about 4 or 5 days, it looked like I lost 10 years from my face. It was one of the weirder experiences I had on a ketogenic diet, which I did for over a year. It's something some people experience while the body is cranking up its production of beta-hydroxybutyrate to fuel the brain.
Parenthetically, it is mostly water weight, but momentum is fine. When you cut carbohydrates, it has a diuretic effect. Along those lines, for each gram of glycogen we store from eating carbs,, we store about 3 grams of water; so, when you cut carbs, you rid yourself of water too.0 -
Good to know. I was just worried that what was happening shouldn't be happening. I also miscalculated, I said Day 4 but realized I am on Day 6, which is great because after the initial 14 days, I want to go off it for one day, eat some Girl Scout cookies, enjoy a cup or two of coffee, and go back on for another 14 days. I like that I can feel a change.0

OK, thirst and tiredness has hit! I didn't feel thirsty earlier and I thought it was because I was drinking lots of water but I fell asleep from 6pm-8pm (strange for me) then woke and now I feel very thirsty. I tried Atkins years ago and it never worked, ketosis never happened and here it happens by accident...I think because I have these pre-measured shakes (3) a day and what I'm allowed to eat doesn't involve much choice. I hope I'm burning fat!0
