so i'm going home to maine in july for my 20 yr class reunion...i know you dont know my body type or what i "look" like right now, but i would love any kind of recommendations on types of dresses that will be flattering for a "thick around the middle still" shape with some pretty nice cleavage...i'm 5'3" and right now am 219.8...my intention is to be closer to 210ish by the time i get home with my current plan...again not that weight determines what i should wear but i'm just looking for suggestions....i wear capris and polos to work everyday, dont dress up much and really am not a "good" shopper....

wrap dresses?
rouching???
ruffles?
empire waist???
short???
long????
bold color???
black???
black/white???

would love any suggestions you folks can offer...what other info might i supply if need be to help you help me???

Using all my 'What not to Wear' skills I would say:
slightly above the knee since you are petite
a wrap dress or empire waist can really compliment a small waist or curvy shape so can be a great idea.

color is hard, black can be flattering but boring. pick something that compliments your skin tone, hair color and eye color. any patterns should be proportionate to your size.

I would invest in a good, comfortable shaper to wear under it (spanx or something of the like it just makes things smoother.

Pick a feature that is your best (face, boobs, waist, whatever) and emphasize it. Bottom line is as long as you feel beautiful in it, it will come through. Good Luck!

OMG!! we sound like twins (height ,weight, thickness) and my husbands 20 yr reunion is in August. I have always liked black I'm not sure if its actually slimming but its my choice. I have found that an empire waist does slim down the thick middle and because of my height I try to stay knee length so I don't look like a head with feet.. I hope you find something beautiful and flattering . But most of all have a great time with old friends.

Ruching is seriously your best friend. I've found I look the slimmest in a shirt that's ruched. Also, agree with nroesler. Get a bright color that compliments your hair & skin tone so it doesn't look like you're hiding. You've lost weight, you're there to make a statement!!! Also, since you are short, definitely right above your knee. I'm just under 5'4" and a little shorter than your knee is flattering on us shorties!

And please get some killer heels! A strappy sandal or a fabulous peep toe pump. Maybe something metallic since it's summertime!?

I am also "thick around the middle" and to take away from that, I would definitely recommend an empire waist dress with a plunging neck line and a great bra to get 'em pushed up but be careful not to get one that's too tight or you might make back boobies too :/ I have big arms so I try to wear sleeves with alot of structure to them, no flutters/ no elastic. You could wear a really great necklace to draw attention to your chest and not your mid-section. Keep the pattern on the dress (if you don't go solid) light and summery. The bigger the print the better if you're on the bigger side. I'd wear a dress that ends a little below the knee and a pair of sandals with a wedge or heels if you can pull it off to flatter your legs and appear taller. Stay away from silky or slinky fabrics, they'll just make everything you're trying to hide 10 times more apparent. I hope this helps a little. Good luck!!

I love whoever said "what not to wear skills"....hahaha..i LOVE that show!!!i double what someone said about the wrap dress...EXCELLENT idea!!!The thinnest part of your body is usually your ribcage just under your boobs, so if you can find something with a thick band that draws the eye to the thinnest part of your body, it immediately gives you a great shape! because your short, wear everything above the knee or it will make you look shorter...also...wear shoes that are pointed toe and do NOT have ankle straps because it will cut you in half and make you look shorter......uhmmm...colour is good, black is flattering so a combination of that would work. No big prints or patterns, they are usually too overpowering on a person of "shorter stature" hehehe...and bottom line, if you FEEL great, you'll look great...so wear something you feell GOOD in!!!!

seriously, i can't wait to go shopping now...i still have a long way to go, but i'm excited to try on whatever the store girls will bring me....i used to just pick my own stuff and found out i was limiting myself soooo much...when they would bring me something or recommend something on the shelf i wouldnt have picked, i used to say, noooo, that's not for me, but now i try on whatever they give me and even pick stuff i would never have picked in the past...i just am sooo much more willing to try it at least...if i dont like it, i say no thanks, but at least i try stuff now....

thanks for all the suggestions, you all pretty much hit on what i was thinking and i will take a "list" of suggestions with me when i go...AND when i find something, i'll make sure to share a picture....yup, i'm really excited :)
