Best goggles for swimming

i am taking the plunge (pun intended of course!) and finally learning to swim. My first lesson is tomorrow and I need some goggles - recommendations please! Thanks.

    We've tried several for my son and the Speedo brand worked the best.

    I have always used Speedo, they are the best ones they have a nice seal, they are comfortable they don't slip. I used to do speed swimming and they were the best ones I came across.

    I strongly recommend against welding goggles. They look sharp but are ventilated.
    I don't believe there are really very significant differences amongst models of swimming goggle but certainly tlh0407 has a point that Speedo is a manufacturer of top-quality products. You'll find that they have many different models, however, at many different price points. The only way to find out what works is trial and error - even the most expensive and well-designed goggles might not be quite right for you; might chafe your nose or fit awkwardly in your eye socket.

    goggles are like running shoes, alot of it is fit and preference. I wear a swim mask which is similar to a diving mask with no nose piece, real good for triathlons and open water swimmimg. I have some back up goggles that are NIKE brand. I have tried several different types and many just dont work ofr me.

    Yep, Speedo. And if you've never worn them before they can be a bit of adjustment to get used to. I hated them when I swam in high school and would most often opt not to wear them because either a) they felt like they were sucking my eyeballs out or b) they weren't sucking my eyeballs out but instead letting in water.

    Since then I've learned that a little bit of the sucking-my-eyeballs-out feeling is normal and necessary for keeping water out. And my eyes haven't popped out yet. :bigsmile:

    You will love learning to swim - the best thing I ever learned to do. My school teacher and bullies did nothing to raise my confidence in the water so I learned as an adult; best thing I ever did.

    I used to use Speedo and make sure you buy the best in the range with the silicon eye seals rather than the cheaper foam ones - they make all the difference.

    I would continue to use Speedo but I need a prescription lens so I have to order a specialised pair of goggles.

    4 votes speedo, one vote against welding goggles.

    I wear speedo with the dark-tinted, reflective lenses. They make me look sort of like an alien, but I live in Florida and they're fantastic for being able to actually see where you're swimming. If you are indoors, you won't need those.

    Speedo Vanquish are the best, I have a couple pairs of them.. comfortable and the straps are comfortable.

    The only way to know which are most comfortable and least likely to leak is try on a selection before you purchase.

    I agree. You never know what works best for YOU until you try them out. I myself prefer Swedish goggles.

    I wear aqua sphere . They are awesome!! I think the key is to find a brand that will stick without the strap, and different brands work for different head shapes . I have a big head:)

    Do you know how to fit test goggles? The best ones are going to be the ones that fit comfortably on your head and around your eyes without leaking.

    Put the goggles on and push the cups tight against your face. When you pull them off you should experience some suction. If you don't, they'll leak. If they feel like they're pushing your eyeballs into your head, they probably don't fit properly.

    Brand name and cost don't mean squat if you can't use them.

    I find speedo goggles to be the best. When I first started learning to swim my instructor let me wear a snorkel mask and breathing tube which really helped even though I looked ridiculous it was worth it !:smile:

    Various brands and models work for me. Best thing I've figured out though is they don't have to be tight to work correctly. All you need is to ensure you get the slight suction effect around your eyes. Basically, you gently press the goggles to your face and they stick a moment before falling off. The band that goes around your head does not have to be tight...it just needs to encourage the goggles to stick to your face. :) Happy swimming!

    I'm an avid and serious swimmer, with a weird face, apparently. I can tell you there is TREMENDOUS variation is tiny things like how adjustable the nosepiece is, how large or small the cups of the goggles are, how the cups seal around your eye sockets, and even the shape of the strap that can dramatically affect how they ultimately fit and feel. I have a favorite swim shop that lets me try on EVERYTHING before I buy it because I'm apparently so hard to fit.

    My current favorite pair is a pair of Dolphin Aquatechs, but I have used Barracuda B300s and Barracuda Predators with success. I tend to avoid "racing goggles" because they're usually very small and don't fit my eye sockets well.

    Many Speedos are very uncomfortable for me, but I can wear the air-sealed Tri model.

    Also, I like double or split straps so I can distribute the pressure from the top and bottom strap,

    Thanks everyone for the responses, especially for the instructions on how to try on a pair of goggles! After trying on a couple pairs I went with the Speedo Vanquish for women. Wish me luck tomorrow! (I'm pretty nervous...)

    I swim outdoors as much as I can so I like the polarised Predator Flex googles from Zoggs. Recently bought a pair of these they are awesome.
