Exercising with an umbilical hernia

So I have an umbilical hernia and I've had it since I was born. It never gave me any pain from exercising but I was told that it would get bigger if I did heavy lifting so I can't do any heavy lifting. How fecking else am I supposed to tighten the loose skin from having my daughter (almost 11 lbs) 10 months ago? I was told that heavy lifting combined with cardio was the only way to tighten it up. That and time, and the amount of time for me is 5 years minimum. I am so depressed! Can anybody offer me any insight?
Right now I eat to maintain my weight, and I do cardio and strength with resistance bands. I drink 8 cups of water daily and have lots of protein.

This is a doctor/professional question.0

actually it's not - I spoke to my doctor and she said it was fine to exercise but not to lift heavy weights.0

The main thing that is going to determine how much the loose tummy skin shrinks back is genetics. So if lifting heavy isn't an option for you there is nothing wrong with incorporating light resistance training or function strength training to maintain muscle. Maybe you should look into body weight training (you are your own gym is a pretty good reference) but even there I would check with your doctor to be on the safe side.0

Curious as to why they cannot fix it?0

I have had an inguinal hernia for two years. I wear a hernia truss when I workout. I lift heavy. I run distances. I play football and basketball. Having seen three doctors, I got conflicting information from all of them. Good luck on figuring it out.0

I plan on doing the resistance training, i did some today. if you check out my diary you can see it. maybe you can give me some tips on which other ones to try? what is function strength training? i have recently checked with my doctor and her advice was to do some core workouts which I already do and am seeing no results. So I really don't think she knows what she is talking about.
Thank you for your reply.0 -

I live in Canada and over here they don't recommend fixing anything unless it causes pain. So, she said she is going to leave it alone. I want it fixed! But the problem with that, is that if I do strenuous workouts it could re-open. So it may be a pointless surgery.0 -

Thank you! I am not looking to get muscular, just to lose the loose skin. What is a hernia truss? Do you have any pics of what it looked like before, does it still stick out?0 -
i also have a hernia just behind and above the bellybutton. doctor told me that they will not fix it cuz i was to fat, and another doc. told me that i can do just bout any exercise as long as it doesnt make me grunt to much... guessing that to mean i can do whatever as long as i am not stressing that area to much to the point that it is really difficult. either way. i have been doing tae kwon do, lifting.. not hardcore.. walking, swimming, core classes where u do tons of crunches etc. my stomach muscles have been tightening up and it some times feels like the hole is bigger but it is not..just everything around that spot is tightening and getting stronger. i havnt done anything yet that has hurt it or enlarged it. i was over 400 lbs when i started getting back in shape and i am now at the 300 lb mark. so i would call that heavy lifting..lol even though it is my own body .0

Ahh good old doctors in canada lol. Functional strength training is all about training your muscles for doing things you do on a daily basis rather then with heavy weights etc. (best way I can think to describe it I am by no means an expert lol). Yoga is a great way to train functional strength and core strength. If you find slow yoga too boring maybe try something like a power yoga class. You are your own gym, great book for teaching you about body weight training (also has an app you can get that is kinda handy). Or maybe even try something like Jillian micheals lots of people on here seem to have gotten good results with it and it really only calls for like 5 pound weights. Do you go to gym at all or work out at home? A couple sessions with a PT who knows your limitations could maybe set you up with a good/appropriate program.
(I will just add that after I had my daughter I was down to 108 pounds, fairly low/healthy body fat percent and I still had the loose skin. )
Eta: I'm assuming with that kind of thing you can't do things like regular sit ups or that kind of ab work, planks and the different modifications of it are great for working the core muscles.0 -
I just had my umbilical hernia repaired, I was having my gallbladder taken out and the surgeon said he could fix the hernia through the same incision. It's awesome to have an innie again. Since you can't go the surgery route, maybe you could hire a trainer to help? Let him/her know your limitations and ask them to give you exercises to help. Exercise will not fix the loose skin, only genetics and surgery can do that. But, exercise will make the muscles fill in some of the loose skin which will help make it look better. Congrats on the baby!0

Thanks for your reply. I have JM's 30DS but I don't really like it. I like doing my own thing, the cardio, the resistance bands etc. It tightened up all my areas except the hernia area - I was telling my friend today that it's always been that way and nothing ever tightens that area so I feel like it will never flatten out. Maybe the crunches I am doing is making it worse, I don't know. But with 30DS they do alot of abdominals for 1 minute per circuit so I don't think that workout would work for me.0 -

Thank you. I do have an innie, I think it is more behind the navel that the hernia is, behind and above? if that makes sense. it is just a small one, but I can feel it move around (the intestines I am assuming?) when I touch it. There is no pain either. But I don't want it to protrude more with the abdominal exercises! Where would I get a personal trainer? I can't really afford to pay someone money for this sort of thing, all our money goes to school, our daughter and living expenses. I don't think I have good genetics either because my mom and my sister both have the same thing.0 -

congrats on losing 100 lbs!0 -
Well, I was diagnosed with an umbilical hernia by an ER doctor and my own doctor in follow up after an incident a few weeks ago....consult with surgeon on Tues to see what they want to do. But the only things I am greenlighted for at the moment as far as exercise goes is walking and biking. No sit ups, crunches, bending, twisting or lifting over 10 lbs or otherwise engaging my abs for a while. That's all I know....0
