I'm Fat... I know. Now what?

Hey guys. I am in need of change and nearly 270 and I need to get down to 190. I'm 28 and I don't wanna die at fifty from a heart attack or a stroke. Im likely to if I don't change. I sit at a computer all day. My wife takes care of the kids.

I have done a lot of research. What it comes down to is I need to excercise, I need to eat a lot better and I need to take the right supplements when I am not eating normaly (which I think I might be doing given my habits)

I have researched some systems to help me try and get where I need to go (190). I don't want to do one of those MLM things like Body Vi or Monavie.

Does anyone know of a good (real) system to help? What have you tried? I am not replacing anyhting with good nutrtion, or excercise. But maybe some help and support?

    Good news,

I am a man who was 270 lbs and now I am down to 190.

You can slim down to 190 lbs WITHOUT weight training, BUT you won't be happy with what you see at 190, I can promise you that.

Get into a strength routine, preference really. You can find info at the bodybuilding.com FORUMS, use the search function.

Also you need to track your intake, and limit it to -500ish deficit.

You do this for a while and you will achieve your goals. Things to note:

-It will take a good year before you see real results in your body (aside from initial fat loss)
-You must change your lifestyle, you cannot go "on a temporary diet" and once you lose it go back to what you were doing before. You must abandon your old lifestyle forever.

    Cheers and good luck!

EDIT: I have before and after pics in my profile.

    Hi Tom,
    Congratulations!

I recommend THIS system! Set up your MFP account so you are eating at a calorie deficit and increase your exercise load. If you aren't doing anything, then even if you did one hour walking each day, you'll be burning calories. If you have the financial capacity and the time, I would recommend that you get yourself a gym membership and get a program tailored for you.
Consider also looking at changes to your diet. Concentrate on whole foods, fresh fruit and vegetables, high quality protein. Reduce or completely eliminate fast food and processed foods. Get to bed befre midnight and maintain important relationships.
    kind regards,

    Ben
  • Thanks Guys...

I was hoping to get some advice on a good system that is real. Like Body by Vi or Monavie, but not that crap your neighbor keeps trying to sell to me. I read about it BBV is really horrible cheap crap, like K-MART in a bag for a gucci price.

I am not going to be lazy, but given my job situation... I will need a some kind of system. But a good one.

Thanks guys. Again, it's not for replacement of working out, it's for the "gaps" I need filled.

Feel free to add me. I am focusing on making better eating choices and try to eat at a deficit of caloric intake versus burned. I have been following the TDEE calculations more than the BMR. I only use supplements after workouts, basically a post recovery workout shake. I have found exercise to be important but not just for the weight loss, I find it mentally stimulating and feel more energized through out the day. I will be honest I have a job were I sit all day and then have to go home to help take care of my daughter. I found the only time to workout is by getting up earlier in the morning. Find what works for you and just don't give up!

Just use MFP and start exercising on your own. Walk, bike, run and body weight exercises all can be done for free to help you build a base of fitness for later. I would recommend setting MFP to slightly active (because of the kids) and 2 lb/week weight loss until you are probably in the 220 range then going to 1 lb/week until you are at goal. Just try to eat more healthy, stay in your calorie and macro nutrient range. If you stick to that you will be a different person in 6 months, but the key is dedicating yourself to logging the food accurately and getting out there and doing the exercise. Best of luck on your journey.

    Hey welcome!

Start with this in my opinion: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/819055-setting-your-calorie-and-macro-targets

From there on, just read up on the stickies in that group for more education but basically just move as often as you can doing activities that you enjoy and eat a balanced diet and don't make weight loss a work, have fun :)

The training system is called Starting Strength (or, alternatively, Stronglifts).

The nutrition system is called IIFYM.

    Enjoy.

For an absolute beginner, a "system" that programs everything is a great, great way to start. That's why SS and SL are such great starting points. They tell you exactly what to do. It's very reassuring when you're a beginner to have everything spelled out for you, so you know you're doing something good and effective. The problem is obviously choosing a "system," but that's where SS and SL come in.

This. I am also down that path. A year ago I was in your shoes - 28, 290 lbs and sitting at a desk all day. I lost the first 50 lbs purely though calorie counting, and then got into a combination of weight and cardio exercises (distance running and cutting exercises rather than bulking, per preference). A year later, I am down to 194 lbs with a body fat of under 18% (instead of well over 30%). You have to make a lifestyle change, and it has to be permanent. The first time I lost weight, I dieted, and I gained it all back as soon as I went back to "normal". Good luck.

i interpreted the OPs idea of a 'system' differently to you.

i presumed he ment something like weight watchers or type of food replacement 'diet'.

of course there is nothing wrong with a training plan!
