I think it's absolutely ridiculous. If she had a "fat gene" which I still don't believe exists then she'll eventually gain it all back again anyways. It's not life threatening it's a vanity thing, sure it looks gross but that's what happens when you lose so much weight so quickly your skin is going to sag. I think she should save up her money and get the surgery done and pay for it herself. I don't think tax dollars should have to pay for these surgeries and to compare it to breast cancer patients is crazy.0

That's what I thought as well, just wanted someone else's opinion....0 -
In general, I agree with you both, but there are medical reasons for skin removal. People with skin flaps like that are very prone to infections, which can be costly and even life threatening if it goes untreated. And there is the idea that not getting the skin surgery would discourage people from having the surgery, which does cost the health system more.
I can really see both sides, but lean to the side of no it shouldn't be covered as a rule.0 -
Wow. I know women who have had breast cancer. How dare she compare her love of food to that. Boggles the mind0

Didn't you read the article? She had the 'fat gene' so wasn't overeating. By the way, I have a bridge to sell you LOL....
I do believe that some people have a genetic predisposition to obesity, but they are not getting obese just because of that. It's just likely easier for them (us LOL) to get there. It's still about eating!!0 -

Fat gene huh. How does she know she has it or just gave up and blame it.
I had been overweight for over 25 years and up to nearly 27 stone and I didn't eat to excess compared to a lot of people. Less than 2 years later and I am just over 12 stone. No surgery was needed and I have a lot less loose skin than what I was expecting. It cannot even be seen most of the time.
Skin surgery is not something to take lightly. It ican be a big operation and infection can happen afterwards and it has been known that the scars look worse than the excess skin. That is why I would never have it.0
