Cut out wheat.....lose weight??

I keep seeing articles on this and yesterday and entire book on the subject. Cut out wheat and lose weight. I'd love to hear everyones thoughts ,opinions. Not sure I'm buying it. Although I did not read the book or the whole articles.

No. Its like every thing else that "they" say will help you on the scale. I am gluten intolerant and do not eat any wheat. The only thing that has gotten lighter is my purse. Proper portions and exercise is how you lose weight.0

If you have a medical condition that would be causing a problem in your weight loss by eating them then by all means you would want to cut it out... beyond that people can lose weight eating wheat, grains, etc.. as part of their daily diet....... Best of Luck....0

I eat wheat and have lost 25 Lbs doing so. Some people do have gluten intollerance (though I think it's kinda overblown) and apparently giving up wheat helps them lose weight. Personally, I think it's just hocus pocus just like any low carb/low fat/low whatever diet.
When you cut something out of your diet you're inevitably creating a caloric deficit so long as that thing isn't replaced by more of something else. So...people go on low carb diets and lose weight...yeah...because they're cutting and/or eliminating an entire macro that also happens to be calorie dense. Same goes for low fat/no fat diets...cutting out an entire macro that is calorie dense.
On that same token, foods made with wheat tend to be calorie dense...so if you cut them out, you'd likely to lose some weight. Same thing happened to me when I gave up soda...I lost some weight just giving up soda because I was simply taking in less calories.
All diets work on the same principle...calorie deficit.0 -

I successfully went from obese to a healthy body percentage while eating wheat, in the forms of weetabix (my favourite breakfast), bread and pasta
wheat products are calorie dense, wholegrain wheat is better than refined for various reasons such as containing more fibre and vitamins but it's still calorie dense - so long as you are careful to be accurate when you weigh and log them, and keep it within your calories and macros, you can still lose weight eating wheat. It works for some people to give up wheat without counting calories, because wheat products are calorie dense, if you eat the same meals but cut out bread, pasta and other wheat based products, then the person will be eating fewer calories, and that may well result in weight loss. It's easier not to overeat if you don't eat so many high calorie density foods............ but that doesn't mean you have to cut them out, if you're careful with calorie counting and logging, you don't have to cut anything out of your diet, just pay attention to getting the nutrients your body needs and stay within your calorie and macronutrient goals. So yes, you can eat wheat and lose weight, but probably you'll end up eating significantly less of it as a result.
Giving up wheat is more about health for some people, because allergy to wheat is more common than people think, and wheat can be dangerous to people with celiacs disease. If someone has a low level wheat allergy, the symptoms may not be immediate enough for them to realise it's wheat that's causing it. So of someone has an ongoing issue with allergies that seem to have no cause, or digestive problems, giving up wheat for a trial period may be a good idea. If they give it up and notice a big improvement in health, then they probably have a low level wheat allergy and should avoid wheat altogether. Anyone who doesn't have health issues from wheat can enjoy it within their calorie/macro goals and still lose weight.0 -

I recently read "Wheat Belly", which is probably the book you are talking about. The research findings are definitely interesting and thought provoking. The science is based on the high glycemic index score of wheat - that it raises blood sugar more than table sugar (I can't remember the exact numbers or measurements) . There is also a lot of information about the modification of wheat from it's original form.
Re: the comment I quoted above, the Wheat Belly doctor/author discusses weight loss (which is not the primary purpose of the book -- the primary purpose is to discuss research findings related to health problems that have been alleviated by cutting wheat from diet) and advises those who go off of wheat to also avoid "gluten free" versions of foods because rice starch and tapioca starch and other gluten free substitutes that are used to make "non wheat versions of wheat containing processed foods". Apparently those types of starches and substitutions are among the very few foods with a higher glycemic index than wheat. Which is one possible reason why not everyone who becomes gluten free loses their excess weight.
Just for the record, I am by no means a Wheat Belly expert. I read the book once a few weeks ago and thought it was interesting. I may not be stating the info exactly 100% correctly, but if you are interested there is a comprehensive website that is official and more informed than me!0 -

I credit cutting wheat and sugar with completely changing how I feel about food. I'm not even interested in food any more. I feel free and unshackled. Food is just fuel to me, now.
I think I probably have one of them there intolerances, though.

unless you have issues with it it's not worth it. i have a wheat allergy and didnt lose weight by cutting it out.
as someone who has issues with wheat, i advise to NOT cut it out unless you have to. it's in so many things and it's just not worth trying to go out of your way to avoid because it's in so many things that you wouldnt even realize, so even i you're thinking you're going wheat free because you're not eating bread or pasta you still are consuming it with flavored coffee, condiments, lunch meats, etc0 -

Unless you have a sensitivity to it, there is no reason to cut it out. Wheat is just the newest 'big bad' that is being blamed for people being overweight. Or, to quote something I read yesterday: "I personally feel that it's unlikely that the richest 1% of humans on earth all suddenly and simultaneously developed allergies to every single common food, but that's just me"0 -
I eat wheat, and I still lose weight...AND I do have a slight intolerance to it (not celiac disease though), but I still eat it and lose while eating it.0

I started eating wheat the first day I found this site. If I bust my ars working out and maintain my wheat bread intake it works in the end compared to eating white bread, not working out and gaining weight.....0

I am reading the book now. so far, it sounds a little like Atkins, basically telling you to cut way down on carbs, and eliminate breads, pastas, rice, etc.... I haven't gotten to what he actually wants you to eat, I'm on the intro part where he is discussing why the wheat and wheat-like gluten foods are bad for you and how they cause a multitude of ailments in addition to obesity. Oh yea the book I am reading is called Wheat Belly.0

I'm gluten intolerant, and while it's annoying to see people use going gluten free as their newest diet fad..it is certainly making my life easier when I'm just trying to find something to eat in a restaurant, or cook a quick meal..So I'm all for this new fad...
Anyhoo, a lot of people (myself included) who stop eating gluten actually end up gaining weight because they've been previously (at least slightly) malnourished. Gluten free breads, cookies, crackers, or whatever are usually more calorie dense, expensive, and cardboard like..so I pretty much gave up the idea of eating any of that and heey I'm losing weight.0 -
about 15 years ago I was having migraines really badly. I went to an allergist who said I had a wheat intolerance...not gluten but wheat...I cut it out for about 2 years. I did drop a lot of pounds but I was trying to learn new foods to eat to replace foods that were once my favorites. I loved bread so I had to find something I liked. I loved flour tortillas but only tolerated the flavor of corn tortillas etc. While I was learning new foods to eat I felt like I was starving (dramatic I know) I had to find good substitutes for foods I was used to eating and thus I was super restricted for a while.
The learning phase was difficult. I ended up eating a very clean diet while I was learning. I got married, moved out of the very old apartment building that likely was more a cause of the headaches than anything as they frequently had exterminators "treating" the building, there was mold in the basement and then i got pregnant in which I have learned that pregnancy takes anything you ever knew about your body and makes it different. I was able to add wheat back into my diet with no issue. I eat a lot less wheat than I used to as I got used to some of my grain free meals etc but the adding the wheat back into my diet did not make me gain weight..having 4 children in 6 years did.....I still eat wheat and am smaller than I was before I got married and ate no wheat.0 -
I don't know about the rest of you, but I absolutely CAN eat only one Lay's potato chip.....
...but the second I put a roll in my mouth, I'm eating all the bread I can get my hands on.
I have the same problem with raw bell pepper. Once I taste it, I'm eating all of it.

Wheat is calorie dense & high in carbs. It is an excellent fuel for highly active people (like Roman soldiers). For those of us that spend all day at a desk, it's not the best choice unless eaten in quantities so small you might as well not even start.0 -
I am gluten intolerant and on the advice of my Dr. started a gluten free diet over a year ago. I have not lost any weight based on this diet at all. I must say though that you tend to eat more carbs than eating a wheat based diet so maybe that is one of the reasons why I didn't have any weight loss. Also, I did not exercise on a regular basis.0

Besides chocolate and peanut butter, I am addicted to baked sweets, and I love to bake, so lately I just don't buy flour and don't bake anymore - Out of sight, out of mind... and belly! I also like to have vermicelli or rice for supper instead of pasta, which has got me using more veggies. I'm happy with the results.
Besides those who are celiac, some people have mild wheat intolerances which can be a nuisance on the body, but not enough to be able to pinpoint it, so some people who stop eating wheat notice they feel better, aren't bloated, etc. Try it out and see how your body reacts.0 -
Any "diet" "plan" that says you are not allowed to eat X, only allowed to eat Y, or have to limit your calories to three digits is a recipe for failure, written by some tardhat trying to sell a book, a pill, or a "plan."
Forbidden foods = binge night marathons.
I eat a banana every morning, chocolate milk twice a day, and a peanut butter sandwich on wheat almost every day for lunch or a snack. My weight is melting off at a steady pace, and I have enough energy to exercise as much as I want.
I'm not on a diet, because **** diets.0
