End of the day splurges are ruining me!

I do great all day and I get to the evening and ruin it with an impulse splurge. Feeling frustrated with myself!

Self control is the hardest part. Just some tips to try.. Drink lots of water. Log how you feel when you want to snack, I'm an emotional eater so if I'm bored or stressed I pig out. Then you can see what's triggering you to splurge. If you crave something sweet then eat a pickle.. It's weird but it works for me. Try going to bed earlier and make a rule you can't eat after 6:30 pm. Just some stuff to try.... And when you get the urge to splurge log on here and read success stories or keep busy motivating someone else!! Good luck and you can get thru this ;)

Find something not too caloric to munch on at the end of the day... like an apple and peanut butter (or PB2) or some celery and hummus.

Same problem here, and I fixed the issue:

I try to plan my day in advance. Like, tonight I'm about to enter in everything for tomorrow. The very FIRST thing I add to my tracker is the Skinny Cow or Weight Watcher ice cream treat I like to have at night. I plan my splurge first, and then the rest of my day around that. Even when I started at 1200 calories I did it that way. (I've since moved my target up because I stopped losing weight at the crappy 1200 MFP gives you. It's NOT enough for anyone.) I'm now losing weight faster at 1600.

But I digress. Point is, plan your day around what you want most.

A couple things that have helped me with that are 1) I no longer keep my favorite splurge foods in the house so when I'm tempted to overeat at night, I only have healthy choices. I still splurge on occasion but instead of having a whole package of cookies at home, I will buy one cookie from a bakery so I can't eat ten of them in one sitting. 2) I also plan my days in advance and have started eating dinner a bit later so I don't get hungry before bed. I figure it's better to eat a healthy dinner at 7:30-8:00 pm and be less tempted to splurge later than eat that healthy dinner at 5:30-6:00 and then eat a ton of extra calories at 9 or 10. It has been a process for me of getting over the late night splurges, littered with setbacks. Get in touch with how you feel after you do that; for me, I do not feel good about myself or feel good physically when I go nuts eating late at night and I remind myself of that when I'm tempted as well. Oh, last thing, part of it for me was late night secret eating and I would sneak downstairs to eat away from my boyfriend or stay up after he went to bed to eat because I was embarrassed/ashamed of my late-night binging so I implemented a rule for myself that if it's something I would be willing to eat in front of someone that must mean I'm actually hungry and making good choices, so I eat. If it's something I would only eat in secret, then I'm not eating out of hunger but out of emotion and bad habits. You can get through this! Be patient with yourself as you figure out what works for you!
  • This is a really good idea. Thank you for posting it. Today I really screwed as I was not aware of the caloric intake of some foods I ate and I went way over my intake for the day. I am starving right now but it is late so I will not eat. I am going to go fix myself a cup of dandelion tea. The taste is not that great but it is hot, and very good for detoxing the liver and will satisfy my hunger pang.

I used to do the same exact thing! Now, I pre-plan my daily meals. It keeps me from making impulse decisions that are often based on emotion and/or boredom. I eat every 2-3 hrs, but I do not snack inbetween my planned meals/snacks (not even on "healthy" stuff! Nothing. Nada.)

I keep it pretty simple. I save up a bunch of calories for the end of the night (usually not intentionally, but it works out that way), and I always have healthy snacks around to use those calories on. Fruit, nuts, crackers, yogurt...whatever makes you happy ;-) Lots of fruit for the same amount of calories as say, a handful of potato chips. Not to say I don't splurge sometimes, but healthy/low cal snacks are more of an everyday strategy.

I SO understand what you're going through! There are 2 groups I have signed up for: "LNS Fighters" and "binge eating support group." They have a great challenge where you tally up how many days you are successful in the month. I find it motivating.

I'm the same!! I usually eat fairly well and once its time to settle on the couch and watch our shows, I end up having some chips or too much salty popcorn. I have been good lately with fitting it in my calories though!! I have also learned to stop at a serving size.
Air-popped popcorn is a decent snack!! Just easy on the salt and butter!!

Great advice on here. And, when all else fails, brush your teeth. You won't want to eat anything after that.

I would recommend you save some calories for the evening so that you can indulge in something you like.... I save some of my calories so that I can have a just before bedtime snack. Best of Luck

I also like to snack at night. I eat light during the day and save the majority of my calories for the evening. Then I don't have to feel guilty about eating at night. Plus I don't have to go to bed hungry, that is really hard for me. Planning ahead will help as well. Hang in there

Save a few hundred calories for the end of the day, and fit in a satisfying snack. If you feel like eating after that, have a cup of tea. Having an assortment of green/white/herbal teas on hand is a great idea. Most have no calories, so you can drink them to your heart's content.

I love the tea idea and I have actually done that! I am the save way, the cravings hit me like hammer and they are hard to keep at bay! It is hard. During week I go to sleep REAL early and that helps a lot - less time to think about the food. I love the brushing the teeth idea and logging in here idea. I will try both in bad days. If and when I watch TV (only weekends) that is when it is hardest and that is when I do not have that many calories left at the end of the day since it is weekend and I end up splurging a bit.

Start weighing your food with a digital scale
    to every gram and ounce
to get the exact out nutritional value
    out of each meal.

Do your research on healthy sources of
    Carbohydrates, fats, & protein.

I have this problem as well! A few things I'm trying now, which have been working, are:
    1) Eat a light breakfast and lunch so I have a few extra calories in the evening
    2) Eat a later dinner
    3) Brush my teeth after dinner
    4) Plan ahead - I'm not very good at planning my meals ahead of time, but I usually plan an evening activity to prevent me from sitting on the couch watching tv which promotes my splurges.
    Good luck!

I struggle late at night too. Recently i've been having sugar free jelly plus light cream 35 cals for a serving, or 70 for a big one. I save it for late on, once i've had that if i still want more i just force myself to go to bed! X

ETA.. I get lots of nutrition. Its my antidepressants that are the problem and have to take them an hour or more before bed.
