Hi

I've been a member since Jan last year and lost a stone / 14 pounds in a year, which is slow but anyway ... I worked hard, exercised watched my intake etc and eventually started to see results... i would plateau quite a bit but i persevered and eventually the odd pound would shift here and there ... so I was 7 pounds away from my goal weight and i knew it would be hard to shift them.

I weighed my self last week and to my horror I have put on 7 pounds ... at first i thought it was one of those days where i fluctuate so i left it a couple of days and weighed myself again, still showing the same and so on ...

the thing that boggles my mind is, the last time i weighed my self was a mere 2 weeks prior to all this so it seems overnight i have gained 7 pounds?! the thing that boggles my mind is that all my clothes fit me the same as before?!!!

can someone please help me as i am so distraught as i now drink less since last year and in the last month even cut out the low cal snacks that i would have here and there. i eat a paleo / low gi diet so am really confused with what my body is doing.

I go to the gym 4-5 times a week and work out for 1.5-2 hours a time with a mixture of interval training on the treadmill, elliptical, spin classes, kettlebell classes and a circuit class ... my allowance for the day is 1200 and i eat back all of my exercise calories - should i be holding some back?

has anyone else been through this - any advice, tips etc are welcome.

thank you

Are you drinking enough when you exercise, if you don't drink enough then your body will quite often store water or liquid from your food. The other thing could be a slight allergy to bread or wheat which can suddenly come on and cause bloating. Do you have any pains or tenderness?

Water? Or perhaps your scale's batteries need to be changed.

I thought about the water thing ... making a concious effort to carry around a 2litre bottle with me and drink that outside of exercise time. I don't eat bread and wheat often at all ... like maybe a small amount 2 or 3 times a month because it bloats me out and makes me feel sluggish.

could i really be holding onto 7 pounds of water / bloat - that seems too much??

    thanks guys!

I know this sounds a little silly but have you moved your scale... i know at my girlfriends parents house, if you move the scale around the bathroom, because of the slope of the floor or whatever it might be, you can change your weight almost 10 lbs... im sure there are some health related factors as well, but 7 lbs in one week, seems like a little bit off, unless you decided to eat a salt block or swallow batteries or something. Good luck.

I have managed to hold on to a good 5-6 lbs after eating my weight in enchilladas and salsa and chips, but one or two work outs and i have sweated most of that out, so holding on to it for that long there is somethign else going on.

Check your measurements as well. You're doing a lot at the gym so could be replacing fat with muscle.

I am sorry I can't tell from your profile if you are male or female, but if it is your TOM you could have gained extra water weight. I gain at least 5 to 7 pounds once a month and if I am good that week I lose it all and a little more. but once again I am sorry I don't know if you are a girl so this might not apply to you

It does seem like a lot of bloat but it's still possible. I've heard some say they can fluctuate up to 10 pounds. Your diary is locked-- if you open it we might be able to help more.

I can gain almost 10 pounds pretty much overnight during my, uh... "Lady time." It's not that crazy.

Literally, to gain one pound, you need to overeat by 3500 calories. Which you can't do accidentally while counting calories (unless, I suppose, you're really bad at it) much less enough to gain SEVEN. Check your scale's batteries, try other people's scales, try the moving it around the bathroom thing, consider your sodium amounts and water retention.

I would love to offer some advice but I am in the exact same boat. I haven't changed anything I have been doing and I have gained 5 pounds in the last week and a half. I am very frustrated too.

It sound like you might be eating too little. I was using a 1200 calorie diet and eating back exercise cals. I plataeued and noticed that when i would eat a "big" meal on weekends that i would not normally eat, I would lose 1-2 pounds within the next few days. that told me that I wasn't eating enough. so increased to 1400 cals a day and eating back exercise cals. that got things moving again. However, you COULD also be over estimating your burns and eating too much. What do you use to measure caloric expenditure? HRM are Not an accurate way to measure, especially if you are going to eat back cals. they are more of a tool to see if you are in your range. I use Body Media. it's over 90% accurate and I trust it. so far, so good! I have been wearing mine for over a year. you also have to condier stress, sleep, and water. these are all factors that can encourage or discourage weight gain and loss.

Thanks for all the tips / advice everyone - really appreciate it.

I think i am under eating by the sounds of it because my metabolism is being unusually slow atm ... that;s a sign right?

i use the machines at the gym (i calibrate myself) and always go with the MFP calorie exercise calculations ...

if i up what i eat to 1400 cals per day and save some of my exercise cals will that help it along?

if you gain a pound by consuming 3,500 cals then if i withhold that amount i should lose right?

i looked and in the last couple of weeks i have been consuming less than 1200 a day ... i didn't realise!

    THANKS

I don't tend not to eat processed foods (i'm mostly on a paleo diet) and steer clear of pre-cooked / ready meats etc and always check the salt / sugar content on packages before it goes in. (used to have a high blood pressure)

I had a look online at my TDEE and found this website for chicks helpful: http://thefitgirls.com/weight-loss-calculator.aspx
just found this one best as it seems a bit more straight forward than others and according to this i am under eating a lot!

so have re-set my goals to lose 0.5 ILBS a week and it's upped my calorie intake to 1400. i will make sure i eat this amount!

good luck with your adjustment and i hope the excess gain shifts!
