Can't work out/seriously work out for 2 weeks :(

So today I had the rest of a suspicious area of skin/mole removed.

It's a pretty decent sized chunk-about an inch-long incision and the doctor told me I can't work out at the gym/do strenuous exercise for 2 weeks...

I'm planning to walk my dog as much as I can...this just blows. I usually did my exercise first thing in the morning before work and did at least an hour and a half good cardio at the gym.

Any good suggestions on exercise that's not too strenuous? Yoga, pilates, anything that may cause strain on my abdominal area is out (can't stretch the area too much or I may rip my stitches).

Replies

  • Perspective. This is 2 weeks. It doesn't blow. What would blow is if your results come back with a bad pathology. Listen to the doc. Take your walks. It's only 2 weeks.

    Good luck on your tests.

Please listen to your doc. You don't want a post-op bleed!

Um, she said she cannot have stain on her abdominal area. Crunches, leg lifts & stretches will pull on abdominal skin. Plus we don't know how far the dr cut. This is why we talk to our doctors and not listen to strangers on the internet.

Best of luck to you! I would just wait out the two weeks. Then ease back into it. I know it is tough to stop a good workout routine that you have going. Maybe take the time to do your walk early and maybe read a book during the rest of the time. You do not want to injure yourself and have to wait even longer to work out. I hope all goes well for you! :)

Flex your arms in the mirror. Combine this with making funny faces :) 2 sets of 10 reps, take the 3rd set to failure.

But in all seriousness you get to learn a lesson about willpower. You can focus on diet alone.

This. Enjoy your break and watch your caloric intake. You can walk, so walk. Walking is good. In two weeks you can start your routine again and hit it hard with fresh muscles.

Two weeks is not going to kill you. Walk the dog. Maybe even eat at Maintenance for two weeks to help your body heal. Read my story at the following link for a little perspective, I mananged to maintain my weight from July until now with no exercise because of a health issue. I just exercised for the first time since July today. It was just a walk, but it felt great!

Doc told me specifically no crunches because of where the incision is. Stretching that area could rip the stitches out.

This made me laugh. Thanks for the advice, all.

It's two weeks. I'd call it "maintenance practice."

Yeah. I think my dog will be pretty happy about it...plus it gives me practice before we get our puppy in a few weeks. Need to make sure I get those Cesar Milan techniques down...or Booker will be a VERY bad example for the new dog LoL.

I enjoy walks-and the weather is warming up a little so it's more fun.

^^^^^^^This.........is what I am doing right now. Every step is one closer to full recovery and no re-injury.

How long have you been working out? I would consider this a rest period, do the walking. Bodies need recovery periods. Watch what you eat and you should be fine.

Listen to your doctors advice. Just walk the dog! If it makes you feel any better, I couldn't exercise for 2 months, due to having a total hip replacement. I know how you feel, one minute you have your hair on fire, exercising like a mad woman, and the next you hit a brick wall! BAM! Take it easy, two weeks will be over before you know it. :)

Thanks for the sound and kind advice :)

I'll just get to walking our dog. We've got a really nice walking trail not far from our house with a lake and forest...nothing makes him happier than walking and it's relaxing exercise for me.
