I am going out to lunch with a friend tomorrow and we are going to eat Mexican (quick, close to work and cheap). Any suggestions on what I CAN eat at a Mexican restaurant? :ohwell:

Mostly you need to make sure you stay away form all the cheese that is in so many dishes! :) I find when I eat out Mexican they are always willing to leave off anything that is on a dish that I don't want and there are lots of grilled options.

I love to order fajitas. That way, I can totally control how much protein, carbs and veggies I eat. Sometimes, I even order an extra "side" of peppers and onions, just for good measure. I avoid the chips as much as possible, but I order jalapenos and a side of limes for extra flavor for no calories. Good luck!!

Is it a chain restaurant that would have the menu and nutrition information online? If not, check one of the chains to get an idea of what will fit in your calorie/fat/carb (whatever you are adhereing to) count. I would think chicken fajitas would be a good choice - without the tortilla shells. Stay away from the chips - ask them not to leave the basket on the table.

Try chicken fajitas but without the tortilla. (Just eat them with a fork). Enjoy a little salsa with them and maybe even a little guacamole. It will be delicious and still very healthy. Good luck!

Having a "not so healthy" meal once in a while is not going to completely kill your diet. A few tips for cutting calories at a Mexican restaraunt....go corn tortilla in stead of flour, cut back on sour cream, cheese, cream sauces. Get "a la cart" so you are not tempted to eat the beans and rice. Just a few tips to cut some calories. The meal will likely be high in sodium as well so try to eat low sodium the rest of the day. Have fun and enjoy!

authentic tacos are usually a pretty healthy option as well... (No cheese and no sauce on them so that REALLY helps) most of the places I go the asada tacos are one of the better choices. also, many places have veggie options that you can order without cheese and/or all the creamy condiments on the side.

a couple of shrimp tacos on corn tortillas might be a good choice if they offer them. Otherwise I would second the chicken fajita idea. Ten chips with salsa isn't too bad for a snack. If you go with a salad be careful they don't dress it, or serve it in a tortilla bowl.

Our local Mexican restaurant offers a vegetarian plate. Also the grilled chicken or shrimp fajitas with corn tortillas isn't too bad. You can control how much you eat. Stay away from the cheese sauces and sour cream. A little guacamole is ok. As for the chips...Don't laugh but when we are planning on Mexican, I pack a baggie of baked tortilla chips. It may be a bit on the "tacky" side but I don't care. I love chips and salsa!
    Enjoy! :drinker:

I would go with fajitas. You can also have corn tortillas (most are 2 for 110 cals), and salsa is great!

Based on the food database, and everything I ate at lunch, I came in at 510 calories for lunch (less than yesterday)! Though more expensive, I ordere the pork carnitas, had 3 corn tortillas, salsa, pico de gallo, avacado slices (3 small), raw cabbage, and only a couple of bites each of the rice and beans! I am very pleased that I was able to accomplish what I thought was not possible!
