When should you up the weight in training?

During training when should you up your weight? Only when your weight is stalling? Or is there a certain amount of weeks / months instead? Thanks!

    I was told to do three sets of 8 -12 reps, if you can't do 8 then the weight is too high, if you can do more than 12 then the weight is too light. No matter how many reps or sets you are doing, I think that once you find you can lift your current weight with ease, then bump it up, don't feel like you "should" be upping the weights after a certain period of time.

    Depends on how many reps you are shooting for. It doesn't matter if its 5, 10, or 20. Once you can do all the reps in good form and feel like you have more in the tank, increase the weight. Another way is to use sets and reps as a gauge. If you are aiming to do 8-12 reps for 3 sets, don't increase until you get 12 reps on all 3 sets.
