I finally did it!!!

I've been religiously working out for three years. I love to hit the gym to lift and really enjoy many different forms of cardio. Except for one.... running. It has been my nemesis since childhood. The idea of running is incredibly appealing to me, but the actual physical part has given me so many problems. My knees have consistently started bothering me every time I've attempted to do more than basic sprinting intervals and I had all but given up on the notion of being able to run for more than two minutes at a time. My asthma flare ups have been another excuse to throw my hands in the air and give up.
I started a boot camp about five weeks ago, mainly because it's heavy on the running and I needed the jolt to try and break through my fitness plateau. I'm probably one of the most advanced in terms of overall fitness among my peers, but have huffed and puffed behind the entire group every single morning wondering why I can't seem to make my body keep up. I push myself very hard and have not been able to work out why I have this particular block. Someone here mentioned in another thread that it was most likely mental and I took that notion and started to hang on to it with all my might.
Today I went to the gym and warily eyeballed the treadmill. I decided that it was time. I jumped on and started to run, doing my best to focus on my music and ignore the time. My goal was to run a mile without stopping or slowing to a walk. While it took me eleven minutes to complete, I am beyond proud of my achievement. Tomorrow I will shoot for adding a minute and will continue to do that until I build my endurance. I feel as if I broke through a mental barrier and have opened up another door of challenges. A 5K seems actually feasible, and it never has before.
Life is great today!

Most excellent! I love that feeling when you know you have accomplished something you weren't sure you could do...and you did! A 5K is def somewhere in your future, just keep building stamina and strength!0

That's fantastic! Those mental barriers can really do a number on us, can't they? I've had a similar experience with you regarding running--tiring quickly, knees bothering me, etc.--but I've been working hard lately to push my body through it. My goal each time I work out is to "do more than I think I can"--and this holds especially true as I try to improve my running endurance second by second. Congrats on your mile! That's a huge accomplishment!0

Thank you all!
Yes, Junebug, mental barriers are far harder to conquer than physical ones for me. I'm super glad for this site, because my prideful announcement of my accomplishment has garnered me some chuckles and raised eyebrows from lots of my day to day folk.
Some people don't realize how hard (or important) this stuff can be!0 -
Congratulations! The best thing with running is to run slow and that will allow you to keep going further and further. Enjoy!!0
