HELP! Appaarently i have the METABOLIC RATE of a 43 YEAR OLD

Ok so my gym got this newfangled scale.

you put in your age, your height, then you step on it and it then proceeds to tell you your weight, you body fat %, BMR, your TBW (what is that?), your muscle weight, your bone weight, and your metabolic age.

First of all a few questions:

- What is TBW? it said something about water? HUH?

- It said i have the metabolic age of a 43 year old!!!! what does this mean? how can i fix this! not that i have anything against 43-year olds but I'm only 23... so i'm a little scared now LOL.

- How does this scale know all of this??? how does it know EXACTLY how much my bones weight and my muscles weight to a tee? how does it know my body fat? it doesn't "see" me or x-ray me? is it spitting out random calculations based on averages of people for my height/weight/age? or it it black magic? LOL seriously!

I can't help much but I know that weight lifting helps the metabolic rate increase. It's a start.

I can't answer all of your questions but my understanding of how the body fat and water weight are measured is that the scale sends an electrical charge through your body via the metal plates on the scale. That charge helps it to determine how much of your mass is lean muscle, fat and water by the conductivity of each of these.

I haven't heard of such a fancy scale as the one you used. I'd like to find one. Being 47, I'd be happy with the metabolic rate of a 43 year old. LOL

LOL, my guess is the TBW is Total Body Weight. I have a scale at home that I have programmed with my age, height & gender. I turn it on, get my feet wet and step on it and it will give me my "water weight % and my body fat %. It must be kind of accurate because if I've had a lot of salt in my diet then my water weight number is way up there.

I wouldn't get too stressed about it - you don't now how accurate it is.

TBW stands for total body water. It's just a bio impedance scale. It estimates body fat % and that's it. It cannot test your metabolism.
