Getting on Track before 30 (29m)

Hello I am a rather obese fellow who is trying to lose enough before I am 30 to be able to enjoy life again. For me that is getting back down to 300 lbs, a weight I know I can start playing sports like soccer again at. It sounds crazy to me that my current long term goal is that high but life was better even when I was that overweight. I guess really my goal is to be healthier but I want to hit 300 by 30, and I just turned 29 in February.
I was on the right track about this time last year before getting a new job as a web developer. I went from being a chef on my feet all day to sitting on my butt all day. I thought the fact that I wouldn't be surrounded by food anymore would help but instead I gained about 60 lbs. Before that job switch I had lost 15-20 lbs.
The sad part is, even though I gained 60 lbs in less than a year it is sort of hard to tell. The biggest difference for me is the fact that I went from being able to fit in 3XL shirts, some more snug than others, with the rare exception of 2XL, to now being in 4XL and that being on the smallish side. I decided that I am done buying clothes that are any larger and that I want to be able to fit in my drawers filled with 3XL clothes.
There is a whole host of reasons for doing this, but the major reason I want to live a healthier life is for my 3 year old son. I really feel like being this large is preventing me from being involved in his life the way I want to be, actively. I don't want to be a couch jockey or computer chair commander dad, I want to be the dad I wanted when I was little, and to a certain degree I got.
Anyway, thanks for letting me post this here and I appreciate this site and community being here already.

Sounds like we might be brothers. I'm trying to loose weight for the same reason. I have a 4yr old and 9mth old and I want to be there for a long time for them, and not from a wheel chair. I'm well over 300lbs and that just wont due. I wish you and all the best in your journey for a heathier life!0

I'm 43, was at (or most likely OVER (you know how we big boys avoid the scales)) 460 as of Christmas of 2012. I've been the "fat kid" my whole life. I teach and coach, and I love to lift weights, but lifting heavy weight just exacerbates the problem. I fell twice, once at Christmas and once in early Jan on the ice, and they were both due to lack of balance/control due to weight...so I said NO MORE. This morning I weighed in at 417, so still a mountain to climb, but it's working. I can wear shirts I haven't worn in a couple of years, my belt is on it's most inner-fastening hole, I have lots more energy, and momma said last Friday was much more enjoyable for her as well...so it's working! Good luck to you guys, don't ever give up on yourself, your family or what you're doing. As for what I'm doing (43 lbs in about 5 or 6 weeks) is stay around 1700-1800 cals a day, try to keep the fat low, and focus on proteins. I still lift, but use dumbbells mostly about an hour at a set, and do some aerobic work, and I've started riding my bike again. Good luck!0
