i just bought my 1st protein powder ever and a few people have been telling me that there is a difference in a "quality" powder.... Eg) those protein powders you get at walmart ( pure protein, etc) vs popeyes, gnc or body building.com... i don't know what to think, is there a real difference in nutritional ingredients? or is a protein powder just a protein powder but just have different textures, tastes, but generally all the same?

I think maybe difference is added fillers. I prefer Dymatize Iso 100. It's around 85% protein, fine powder, so it mixes well, and it taste good.

You want 100% whey - no fillers, no soy.

There is a difference. My GNC powder is a mixture of protein isolate and hydrolyzed protein which is better digested. Some of the cheaper brands have also been found to contain toxic levels of heavy metals. Plus, IMO, the GNC brand protein powder tastes better than most.

Edit to add: There is also a difference in whether there are fillers and how well they mix/dissolve.

how do you know what are fillers? i bought pure protein from walmart as it was affordable but a friend of mine was telling me to buy gold standard, etc as they are not house brands and the quality is better..... for me i was going on what i could afford but if it makes that big of a difference then maybe i will have to spend more?
  • I started out on the cheap stuff and quickly switched to a high quality, because the servings. I can get twice as much protein in one scoop of my Gold Standard 100% Whey Protein vs 2 scoops of the cheap brand I was buying, and a lot less sugar as well! There is nothing wrong with the low quality protein powders, but personally I would rather fork out the extra cash for the quality stuff just because of the amount of protein per serving.

As far as affordability, I bout a 3 pound canister from GNC for $50. There are '17 servings' per canister but each serving has 60g of protein. I only need about 20g of protein extra each day so I just use one third of the "serving" each time so I really get 51 servings out of it. So it worked out to about a dollar a serving.

A lot of those cheaper protein powders work out to about the same price per 20g of protein (at least that I have found) so to me it's worth it to have the better tasting powder.

You can tell which ones have more fillers just by looking at the ingredients. Mine lists Protein blend (hydrolyzed and Isolate), Flavors, and then a couple other things (none of which is a filler just flavoring mostly)
