I am relatively fit after competing in sport at a pretty high level for many years, but after bad injuries i piled on some weight and I am currently needing to lose about 2 stone. What do other people do as their cardio routines as I'm feeling a little lost currently,

anything that gets your heart rate up for at least 30mins: running, HIIT, jump rope etc. are you still injured or in the process of healing?

I love my Nordic Track Ski machine........................very little if any STRESS on the joints. Gets your heart rate up in the zone and a heck of a workout.
I actually picked mine up off of Craigslist for $50, almost brand new. I see them on there often really inexpensively.

I have recovered from the original injury, however I have been getting chronic shin splints for about the last 14 months if I attempt to run more than once a week. I have tried swimming etc but that seems to do little for weight loss. :-)

I use an elliptical cross trainer (with arms) You can burn high amounts of calories with very little strss on the joints. I can get up to 900 calories an hour according to my HRM. I have knee issues and herniated discs in my low back and neck and have absolutely no problems
