How do you know when it's time to throw out your clothes

I know this is a pretty dumb question, but I honestly don't know when to throw out my bigger size clothes. I can still wear my shirts and the majority of my pants I can wear without a belt. Even if I lost more weight I'm sure I could wear the bigger pants if I just put a belt on.
So my question is when is it time to get rid of those fat old clothes. BTW I have 2 closest full of clothing, and no nearby consignment shop and a few I've never worn. Having a hard time letting go of my old clothes.

Go through your closet and hang everything up the opposite way that you normally do. In six months of hanging stuff up your regular way, get rid of everything that is still hung up when you did everything the opposite way, since that means you didn't need it. As far as clothes, use new, proper-fitting clothes as a reward. Donate as you get new. Nobody wants to be a hoarder0

Congrats on having closets of clothes that are too big!
Just because the pants aren't falling off you doesn't mean they fit. You've worked hard - you deserve clothes that flatter. This is a great article on proper fit - http://www.womansday.com/style-beauty/fashion-style/ensure-all-of-your-clothes-fit-perfectly-116847
If what you have doesn't fit and flatter - get rid of it. Someone out there could use it. Shelters are always looking for women't clothes. Or have yourself one awesome garage sale and use the proceeds to buy yourself something new. If you really love something, get it altered.
I got rid of a bunch of stuff and only kept the things I love. Getting dressed in the morning is so much easier and faster. Good luck!0 -
This is just me but...as soon as it doesn't fit anymore because It's too big I toss it!!! The weight that is coming off is never going back on. You'll feel better wearing smaller sizes that accent your curves instead of wearing baggie clothes.0

I tend to keep my clothes until they get som big they're uncomfortable, or until they just look bad. I'll wear them at home to clean, paint, etc. Last summer I finally realized I needed to get rid of some jeans becasue I couldn't paint without holding up my pants! As I've lost weight I've become more aware of how things fit and I'm finding I just want things that fit better.
That's a good idea about hanging them the wrong way in your closet. I'd have to adjust the timeline a bit since I have winter and summer clothes.
Check out some of the churches in your area - I'm sure some of them will have some suggestions about where and how to donate your clothes. Women's shelters are another idea.0 -
Have the pieces that you really like tailored to fit. Donate the rest. Throw away anything that is faded or has obvious signs of wear.
Things you haven't worn? Do so now.0 -

That's a great idea! I also agree with donating. Even if there's no consignment shop, charities and relief agencies always need adult clothes, especially larger sizes, since people tend to grow out of small stuff and donate, but fewer people have bigger clothes they don't need anymore. Even organizations that help disabled adults can often use clothes, since Medicaid patients get an allowance of around $100 for all personal needs, which doesn't leave a big budget for clothes. This way, you'll get some cute new things and know that you're helping someone who doesn't have as much0 -
Replace them when they no longer make you feel/look good!
Start keeping an eye on sales, and as you replace clothes with smaller sizes, get rid of the old.0 -
Its very frustrating for me. Although my tops are hanging off my shoulders and exposing a lot more flesh than they really should, because I have excess skin around my tummy area everything still fits there
I'm loath to buy anything new at the moment, but getting fed up flashing my bra off to all and sundry!!!!
BUT... having said that, my very biggest size clothes either went on Ebay or down to our clothes recycling plant.0 -
I double shop a bit too. Like, I have a pair of pants I got for $14 that I love, so I got them in the next smaller size too. When the smaller size fits better, the larger size is getting donated0

I can't really afford to replace clothes each time that I lose one size, so usually when I can fit into two sizes smaller, I buy a few "staple" pieces (pair of jeans, some yoga pants, a couple pairs of dress pants for work, etc). In the interim, I make it work with belts to keep my bigger sized pants up and higher heels for when my big pants look too long since they are no longer hung up on my hips, lol! :blushing:0

Do any of the charities pick up donations in your area? Purple Heart, Salvation Army, Red Cross, and sometimes GoodWill might do pick-ups. Check online.
That said, get rid of it because keeping loose old clothing and remaining in that past life is not good psychologically. Clear the closet and free the mind.0 -
Go shopping to find out your "now size." I did & seems I'm inbetween sizes...I'll be wearing a few of my "too big" jeans with a belt till I can easily fit in the smaller size. The rest of the "too big" clothes I'm donating :happy:0

With pants I would donate/sell them when they're falling off of your waist, too big in the crotch, or way too big in the back.
Shirts I would sell if they don't flatter your arms, hide/don't flatter your stomach, or make you look bigger.0 -
I wore my old clothes as long as possible by using a belt or whatever to keep them on. One day a co-worker pulled me aside and told me I really needed to buy new clothes. I took a closer look in the mirror and went shopping. I tossed out my entire wardrobe it seemed and started over. Good Riddance!!0

Get rid of them - if they are gone there is no going back so it is an incentive. I've been buying cheaper new ones & when I find something I like, I get it in my current size and one size down. Going through sizes too fast...0

It was hard for me to figure out at first too but I got a couple comments from friends about my pants looking not so great anymore so I decided it was time to shop for the next size down. I'd recommend shopping thrift and consignment shops or watching out for sales so you're not spending a bunch of money on your in-between sizes clothing. Once you go and try on the sizes that fit you correctly, you'll see the difference much more clearly.
Now when a pair of pants starts feeling loose, I start shopping for the next size down. Unfortunately I get stuck in between sizes quite a bit but that just motivates me to keep going so I keep losing and tightening up to get in that next size. I'll even go ahead and buy a pair of jeans even if it's a bit too tight and will try them on every few weeks to see how they're fitting. And yes, as soon as you've got enough clothes in that next size to get you through a week, start donating the ones that are too big for you. Maybe keep one "before" outfit, just to remind you how far you've come. I kept a pair of pants so I can do that classic before picture where both legs fit into one leg of the old pants. And I may even do a burning ceremony as someone posted about a year or so ago - love that idea!
As someone else said above, just because the clothes aren't falling off, doesn't mean they're fitting you right anymore. If you're dressing for work, trust me, you're looking sloppy by now and that's almost as bad as wearing clothes that are too tight.
Happy hunting!0
