What HAVE You Done, Even Though You Are/Were Overweight?

This thread is a response to the following thread:

http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/797670-what-have-you-never-done-because-you-were-overweight

NOT hating on that thread, but I think we can also recognize the cool things we have done regardless of, and often IN SPITE OF, our weight. We do NOT need to wait until we are "real" to do crazy, cool, sexy stuff.

I will start it off with mine...here are just a few things that I have done, all while being over 200 pounds:

--modeled nude for college art classes for a year
--danced with a flaming hula hoop in front of 200+ people (don't worry; I am a trained fire dancer!)
--taught a hoop dance workshop to fit yoga students
--trained for and completed a half-marathon
--went to Burning Man and participated in "Critical Tits", a topless desert bike ride, with thousand of other women
--got gorgeous tattoos
--won a pin-up contest
--modeled for local photographers
--earned my AA, and my BA
--minored in Dance; got the lead in a dance show case (never danced until my mid-twenties
--took up Ballet and got an A in my class
--built a great relationship with my hunny; we've been together over 8 years (thru thick and thin, literally)
--been to the nude beach

and so, so, SO much more.

we do NOT need to be enslaved by our size.
we can simultaneously work on losing weight, while still knowing we are DEAD SEXY, even at a higher weight.

stop waiting to do cool, terrifying stuff. do it NOW. any day could be the last.

I developed the self confidence to not allow myself to settle for what is easily obtainable.

I dumped the only person that I thought would ever love me/be attracted to me because of my size.

I got a tattoo on my hip.

I joined the volunteer fire department and out fought a lot of the guys during one of our busiest wildland fire seasons... All while wearing a ton of heavy gear.

Flew half way across the world to find the love of my life, who loved me instantly despite my weight (I never though I would have the confidence to do it)--found a flat and moved to the UK after only knowing him (in person) one week. Best decision I ever made. He has now returned with me, and we've been together happily for 3 years. I also finally completed my University degree last year, after finding out I had M.S--and got over the 'life is pointless because I'm not healthy" **** I put in my head. Which encouraged me to eat and not exercise. Successfully learned to live to the fullest while living with an illness and stopped limiting myself because of it! Hard frame of mind to escape.

    So true!!!

I don't let my weight stop me from doing much... I wear revealing clothes...lingerie... have fun in the sack...

I have ridden roller coasters... I canoe...swim... sun bathe on the beach... I speak in front of large audiences...

I love myself.... Do I want to lose weight and know that I look and feel BETTER doing all theses things??? YES! Of course... but I won't let my weight control what I want to do...and alter the type of person that I want to be!!

I started going to Bikram yoga when I weighed 229 pounds. I was way fatter than everyone else there, but I did it and I loved it and once I got over my initial body shame (have you seen the skimpy clothes people wear to Bikram???) I realized that I loved it and benefited a lot from it.

    such great answers all around!!!

even though we are losing weight and have future weight goals, we still rock NOW!!!!

    I've learned:
if we don't give ourselves permission to be be bold when we are big, we STILL feel timid and scared when we are small...
(it's still possible to feel "unworthy" of a bikini when thin if we have spent years telling ourselves we are "unworthy" while fat).

some things look better on me when i am smaller, but i am fabulous no matter what size :)

Pics of the pin up contest or it didnt happen!!!!!!! Lol!

I also ran a half marathon. I also fire danced (but not for a crowd, just for kicks). I learned to surf.

I think your pin up thing is awesome. I am really into rockabilly style myself and I have a hard time finding a bad "before" pic because I look so good in all my pics. It's amazing that I felt so unattractive!

Thank you for this!! I was 261 lbs and confident as can be! I wore a swimsuit and didn't care what others thought about me. I will also dance at the bar and feel completely comfortable in my own skin. I loved myself than and continue to love myself now!

Learned to scuba dive (you think bathing suits are bad - try a wet suit!)
    Got my BA & MBA
Went to England, Scotland, New Zealand and Australia.

Got married - ok, that one was the hardest, I hated how I looked in that dress, but I loved the man who put the ring on my finger, and that's all that matters in the end.

Though I have to admit, having lost 25 pounds now, I'm so much happier and starting to feel sexier. I've also got my thyroid, vitamin D and B12 levels in sync which is making it easier to stay happy and on track.

I did (mostly walked) a half marathon at 330 lbs.

edit: Oh and Toastmasters - I was petrified of any kind of public speaking. I'm not great it now, but I don't freeze up or go into convulsions anymore.

my half marathon was done entirely walking. wanted to move on to running, but a bad knee prevented that :grumble:

-learned to dance and feel great and beautiful doing it
-found a man who treats me wonderfully, and with whom I have amazing sex, sometime on top
-learned to sail - the extra belly gets in the way of crawling around on deck, but the extra weight is useful to counter heeling
-worn a bathing suit in public: other people's opinions are not keeping this woman out of the water!

    I love this thread :-)

I have done a lot of the things people on here have mentioned...

--spent 6 weeks in a coastal city in Spain
--Got a BA in a performance degree (vocal music)
--started hoop dancing, led hoop jams/classes, went to hoop conferences (where most people are super skinny), did yoga at those hoop conferences with lots of skinny, flexible people, performed in front of lots of peoples, fire hooped in front of peeps (for fun and performance), hooped in lots of parades
--sat in and opened for my boyfriend's band
--modeled for a friend's wedding etsy shop

    I feel like I'm forgetting lots of things....but that's just a few!!

Hope this counts, 37lbs down, and yesterday I achieved something I wanted to do when I lost all of the weight, I walked 5km (3.1 miles) from city centre back to my house in an hour, I know it doesn't seem like much but a good 1k of that length was spent walking next to a cemetery on really uneven grass, in flip flops as well :smokin: but the proudest part is bar from a little blister on my toe, I'm not in the least bit sore today :blushing: This is something I never though I could achieve, but I'm so proud of myself.

Just wanted to say in regards to the OP, you reminded me of my nude figure drawing class were everyone said that their favorite model was the big girl because she was the most fun to draw and made for the most visually interesting drawings. :~D

    Ran.

I ran half a mile even though I'm still over 100 pounds overweight.

Then I posted it several times everywhere...

    This may have happened today,
  • I am loving this different perspective!!! I've never really thought about it this way...

-overcame self hatred and years of cutting (thanks entirely to my wonderful partner!)
-moved in with my boyfriend before graduating high school, then went on to graduate in the top 10% of my class and get my associates degree
-picked up my first hula hoop and learned to hoop dance
-took my first belly dance classes
-reached my 8 year anniversary with previously mentioned boyfriend!
    -became addicted to gardening
-started my own business making and selling jewelry and costumes (now we've been doing it professionally for 5 years!)
-repaired my damaged relationship with my mother
    -started learning the harp

well, that made me feel like a million bucks! And here I was thinking being overweight was ruining my life.

Its really inspiring to me to read all yalls posts! Did you all know you were so awesome?!

    From 240 lbs to 198lbs

    1) rediscovered scuba diving and felt so much fitter on holiday
    2) ordered two swimsuits a size down from where I started and got into them 4 months later
    3) challenged my boss politely re a payrise and got it
    4) did a sales pitch in front of a room full of men and got the deal
    5) got a lead singing part in an amateur show and had a ball bringing out the inner diva!
    6) actually looking forward to my next major holiday in 9 months time knowing that I will rock it!
    7) actually enjoying the gym!
And really appreciating this site and the support on here...

So from 198 lbs to ??? What will happen next?!
